The San Diego Comic-Con has brought an unexpected surprise and delight for all the Star Wars fans when the announcement about bringing back Star Wars: The Clone Wars series was made by none other than Dave Filoni, creator and producer of the series. This announcement surely added more color to the ongoing celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the the Clone Wars at the San Diego Comic-Con.
The series had first made its debut in 2008 on the Cartoon Network channel and had continued till 2013 after which it had been shut down abruptly without any prior notice to its viewers. This new series, expected to be released next year, will showcase the war that took place between the Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith movies. With the promise of 12 new episodes, the series also promises to feature existing characters like Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin’s apprentice Ahsoka Tano, Captain Rex amongst other fan-favorite characters.
The year 2013 brought an abrupt ending to the series by Lucasfilm by sending its last six episodes to Netflix while another story ending plot made it to the markets in the form of a novel – Dark Disciple by Christie Golden.
With the fans in cheers, Dave Filoni also told them how everyday he got tagged in Twitter by thousands of fans asking him to save the Clone Wars. To add to their existing bewilderment, the panel ended with a screening of a trailer along with the hashtag, #CloneWarsSaved. The trailer begins with a long focus on Captain Rex with his dialogues, followed by the text: “A war left unfinished… until now.” The rest of the trailer portrays the story that led on to the battle as mentioned in Star Wars lore, the siege of Mandalore. It also shows the reunion of Ahsoka and Anakin, who had parted ways during the ending of season five.
Facing competition from streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, Disney is working on Disney Direct – its streaming service where apparently, the last series of the Clone Wars will also be streamed next year to attract the viewers.
“Any opportunity to put the final pieces of the story in place is meaningful as a storyteller.” Filoni said, as the enthusiasm kept on growing amongst the fans at the event.
