It has been very rightly said that what we achieve what we imagine to. The strong belief in one’s own capabilities and our goal-directed behavior defines our success story. There are majorly two types of mindset through which person define his/her belief systems. One category is those having fixed mindsets who believe that their cognitive and behavioral capacities such as intelligence, creativity, and personality traits are largely inherent. On the other hand, another category comprises of individuals who believe that their talents can be shaped by their efforts such as hard work, strategically planning, and other’s valuable inputs are those that have a growth mindset. Such people focus more on the learning process.

Key points to remember!

  • Possessing a growth mindset does not mean having an open mind and a positive outlook regarding everything. There is no existence of any pure growth mindset rather we possess both fixed and growth mindsets.
  • You must have heard that efforts make no sense until they become productive. Therefore, a growth mindset is not about appreciating and reinforcing efforts rather it is a joint process whereby an individual learns new things and put these into efficient actions.
  • Good things happen to those who never give up. A growth mindset is not about making grand statements about creating wonders. Rather, it is about rewarding the meaningful efforts of others even if the outcome is not too beneficial. It is about working collaboratively and making a joining effort for growth and development in a holistic manner.

How to build a growth mindset of students in educational settings?

It is surely not a cakewalk to attain a growth mindset; it is because we, as human beings always want to conserve our energy rather than putting efforts into enhancing our growth. Therefore, it becomes harder for individuals to think in unique ways and learning the effortful strategies such as sharing information, discovering new things, accepting mistakes etc. Growth mindset helps us in gaining more self-awareness.

One of the most effective teaching practices is to inculcate and develop the growth mindset among students as it is very important for the cultivation of their capabilities and talents. Here we will discuss some of the most efficient ways by which we can build a growth mindset among students in educational settings which are mentioned below:

  1. Making use of different teaching strategies
  2. By practicing various instructional ways and developing novel strategies can help in the development of learning abilities to manage different hurdles. These teaching tactics may include using video or audio clips, or presentations while conveying lessons, make students work in a group also, challenge students by giving them the opportunity to self-demonstrate what they understood through projects and other assignments.

  3. Elaborating answers is crucial
  4. By allowing students to expand their answers during discussions allows us to know the extent to which they understood the concepts. Also, motivate the students to understand the contextual meaning in deeper levels. This can be accomplished by organizing Problem based learning activities and post-presentation question-answer series. It is because this enhances the critical thinking ability as well as problem-solving skills in students.

  5. The purpose of Abstract thinking should be explained
  6. Abstract thinking is crucial for improving the knowledge of a particular concept. Therefore, the significance of a particular concept, its practical applications, and benefits to the students should be explained. Therefore, indulging students into active participation in discussions and organizing experiential learning activities can be very helpful.

  7. Goal-based journaling should be encouraged
  8. Setting goals for one’s life are very important for building a growth mindset. The goal should be made in such a way that is should be specific for a particular purpose; it should be measurable and attainable. The goal should be realistic and not like a free-floating desire; rather it should be based upon a certain period of time.

Conclusion

All these ways that are mentioned above will encourage students to distract themselves from the notion that their abilities are inherited and make them believe that they can bring about a change in themselves by putting in their efforts.
