This article focuses on dreams during the later stages of pregnancy and their correlation to the risk factors, or non-existent risk factors, that were taking place in the pregnancy of forty different women. The purpose of this experiment was to see if there were any similarities, or differences, between the dreams of these women. There was another factor that was also taken into consideration when testing these women as the number of women in each category was placed in another category as to whether they had given birth before, multipare, or had not given birth before, primipare. This was done so that there could be another factor that could be analyzed to see if there was any correlation at all between having given birth before and the characteristics of their dreams, in comparison to those who had given birth for the first time.

After providing their informed consent, these women were asked to recall and describe one of the dreams they experienced while in their third term of pregnancy; the time during a pregnancy where the most amount of dreams occur. The way this experiment was able to show if there was a correlation between these variables was by compiling a list of keywords that were generated from a piece of software and by receiving a score for each prevalent word depending on their repetition during the subject’s dream recounting. After receiving all the results from the experiment, they were organized into four sections which were then placed onto a graph for comparison. The left side of the graph represented the inability to have dreams that make sense, as the women with risk-factors present were placed on this side of the spectrum.

On the other hand, the right side of the graph represented the ability to have dreams that made sense and were able to be reproduced. The women with pregnancies that were low-risk, appear on this side of the spectrum. Simply from these two factors, it can already be seen that there is a correlation with the quality of the dreams between those with high-risk pregnancies and those with low-risk ones.

Another relationship that was observed in this graph was that the women whose pregnancies were their first, had dreams that were more heavily correlated with the formation of stronger relationships with their doctors. These doctors to the women were like the higher beings to them as they were the ones who knew everything about what was going to happen to them and that they were going to help them through it. This relationship definitely shows the amount of trust that any pregnant woman places in their doctor as they help them every step of the way.

On the other hand, women who had previously had a pregnancy formed more relationships with others in general. This may be attributed to the fact that the women who had gone through this process before, know what is coming for them and they don’t have as many worries since they have already experienced it before. Another detail that was observed through this experiment was that as being a previous mother, the dreams show that these women are more focused on shaping herself as a mother and understanding her role. This was able to be interpreted by realizing that these pregnant women were dreaming about their relationships with their own mothers. It was concluded that the reason for this was because the pregnant women were trying to learn from their own mothers how to be a better one themselves and by helping them form their own identity.

I found this article very interesting as I never thought about how the factors in our lives, such as risks in pregnancies, could alter our dreams so much. As I was reading this article and all of the narrated dreams, I didn’t realize that each small little detail in these narrations were so important. The graph at first did not make any sense to me as it just seemed as though there were random circles placed on the graph, but after rereading this article over a couple of times, it all made so much more sense. I also find it interesting how the dreams of those women who are in their first pregnancy are so much different than those women who had previously gone through this process before, even by the slightest detail.

What really made sense to me in this experiment was that the women who were experiencing their first pregnancy were forming closer relationships with their doctors, as the women who had already experienced it before were more focused on other relationships and themselves. It seemed as though first-time mothers are mostly focused on their babies, while previous mothers are more focused on themselves and others as they are more comfortable with the process.
