It’s really great that the Department of Education is developing a drug education module. This is aimed at strengthening prevention against drugs at public schools. This will not only benefit the students but also the teachers and staffs. At schools only the introductory drug concepts are being taught at the students, this program will further teach the students things they haven’t encountered before. I think the students in the Philippines have very little information or knowledge about the drug issues that has been happening here.
There were a lot of drug users in the period of antebellum, if it weren’t for the implementation of the war against drugs there would still be a lot of users till this day. Thousands of drug users were killed and before the war they were living freely on the streets corrupting other people’s mind. Some may not support the war against drugs but I must say it has been a huge help for our country. Long before the war on drugs I remember that whenever I walk or go to the squatter’s area to buy something I could see people who were using drugs it was really evident that they were drug users if not pushers. There was this huge mess 2 or 3 years ago when the police raided this pandesal store in the squatter’s area. It turned out that store was a place to store drugs and there was an even bigger hideout for drugs further down the squatter’s area. That pandesal store was just a cover for the main hideout. There were a lot of people involved in that mess I wouldn’t say it that what happened was a good thing because a lot of people suffered too. It was sad to see that their children were left without anyone because of those people’s involvement. There was also this time when I went to my home province for a vacation, there were a group of kids that were hiding out at the back of a church using marijuana. I could see them every night lighting it up because the church was only across the street from our house. This shows the lack of supervision and guidance of the parents of those children.
When I converse with those people they actually even invited me to try using it. I strongly declined of course but I saw how others were being pressured to join because I could see how hard it was for them to say no. I could easily decline because I was not even a permanent resident and I wouldn’t be that pressured to join unlike the others who live there. I always wonder why the patrol in that barangay was really lacking because of that kids belie that they have the freedom to do anything and everything they want. Not only they use drugs but people there starts smoking and drinking beer at a very young age. I met a girl who worked under my aunt’s store she is only 12 years old and she already smokes and drinks, she learned to do that when she was only ten years old, she was influenced by her cousins. Most of my cousins are “basaguleros” they have a lot of vices they stopped their schooling or they barely attended school at all because of their vices. All of them started to smoke and drink when they were very young and now they are trying to teach their “ways” to me and my brother.
Thankfully they haven’t turned to drugs yet although I wouldn’t be really surprised if I find out one day that they did. This shows that the people there barely cares for their health and have no plans for their future. Pertaining to that context this makes me remember the thing that happened with my neighbor. She accidentally got pregnant at a very young age and that resulted to her boyfriend leaving her. She became really depressed and she depended on the use drugs and to smoking and drinking. She couldn’t stop herself from those vices and I could see that she was slowly ruining herself and the future of her child. Now that she’s gone she left her child all alone with her mother. I could tell that this will affect the life of her child once she grows up. With all this happening around me this makes me think that not only that the drug prevention education should be developed but there should also be a Sex Education program for schools.
Sex Education could also be a great eye opener to students who wants to experience bodily pleasures or to even those who don’t. Sex Education should be also given priority here in the Philippines since there’s also a lot of unprotected sex or unwanted pregnancy from teenagers. This should also be developed so that students may be aware and be knowledgeable in that study since the people here knows little to none about that matter. I hope that this drug education module will be implemented and will get on an auspicious start so that it may last long to help students be aware of it.
