A review of The Giant’s House

The novel Giant’s House was written by Elisabeth McCracken. The novel was published in 1996, which also acted as a year when it was short listed for National Book award under the fiction category. The themes portrayed in the novel include the disadvantages of a person perceived to be a social outcast or individuals who live with disabilities among the conformists. The other theme that was postulated in the novel is the aspect of forgiveness and acceptance when treated in a bad manner. The third theme that is evident from the text is realizing that love has the ability of transforming people who are going through a tragedy. The two elements that the author used to bring out her theme include setting and use of symbols.

The setting of the novel was in the library. This is well illustrated in the novel by James. James went to the library to look out for the astronomical and ornithological books. He also looked out for the sciences books which discussed height and tininess. The setting expressed the thematic idea of the social outcast. James stated that he wanted books about people like him.

The other element that the author used to convey his theme is the use of symbols. The author used the word giant symbolically. This is symbolically used to represent the stature and height of James. According to the novel, “anthropometry was not proper then he came out to realize the word that he was searching for was giant. This symbol illustrated the situation of life that James went through. His situation was considered to be an abnormality which he felt very uncomfortable when a person utters it.
