We intend to explore current research in order to capture a glimpse of how reverse engineering the brain can be used in AI and how much progress has been made in this Grand Challenge. Specifically, we want to discover how to make AI goal oriented in the same way that humans are so that they can design tasks; while AI has mastered many narrow skills, AI still does not have “agency”. On the other hand, the brain, our naturally evolved super- machine, is far more efficient and powerful than any other computer we have developed.
By untangling the secrets of the brain we can make improvements upon latest software and algorithms. This will be done through reverse engineering, which is the process of working backwards from calculations and measurements of a system in order to determine how the system functions.In the status quo, no much is understood about the inner workings of the human mind; the organ has trillions of neurons connecting to generate one of the most densely, complex systems known. Full reverse engineering of the brain could turn into one of the most expensive and time sucking projects ever worked on. However, in order to abate the aforementioned constraints on AI, the algorithms of the human mind must be well-understood, so that they can be codified in the language of computers and put to use; if done successfully, AI will have speedy computing powers, as well as the ability to set objectives and make plans based on a set of values and ethics. This would facilitate industry immeasurably.
Thus, in order to improve AI, we would first attempt to study the algorithms of th human mind. Current AI systems use Neural Nets, a means of doing machine learning whereby a computer learns to perform a function by surveying examples through training. For example, in order to learn what an object looks like, a computer must be first fed thousands of images of the object in different contexts and lightings, whereas, the brain can identity the same object by forming a “schema” after analysis of a single image. After this, we would attempt to find a way to bridge the gap between human and artificial intelligence, so that the two can work in tandem, and the world can reap the benefits of the both of them.
With a vast improvement in AI from reverse engineering the brain, computers could automate and assist several jobs. The stakeholders are the entire global population! For example, like C3PO in Star Wars, an intelligent robot could aid in diplomacy and international business with translation between languages, connecting the divided world. In addition, an improvement in AI could diagnose medical conditions based on images, leading to a more efficient healthcare system. This would lower prices since computers do not require a salary, broadening the reach of healthcare to the underprivileged community. From medicine to finance, any and every field would benefit from the presence of a guided, focused AI system. One harm that could come from intelligent AI is the loss of jobs as AI phases out positions lacking in traits that only humans could have like creativity and sympathy.
