The face of vans we see today on our roads was not always like this. In the past vans looked very different, so different that if we see a van today of an old model we might not even recognize it as a van because it is not like our vans today. If one takes time to study vans, he will see the evolution of vans and realize that it is all together a very interesting subject to search upon. The whole idea of the design of van changing through the years makes a person really eager to inquire about them. Now we will take about the evolution of some of the most famous vans over the last century.
The vehicle that saved Chrysler from being domed was their minivan manufactured in November thirty years ago in 1983. They created a masterpiece that would keep their name alive for the next thirty years.
In 70’s and 80’s; people had no option of good family cars as Station wagons and Sedans were shrinking their size to save the charges of fuel (as it was the time of oil depression) all the other vehicles on four tires were considered as commercial and not for private purposes which was making people desperate for some sort of vehicle that would be economical to keep and sufficient for the family and Chrysler’s creation was like a blessing in disguise for the people.
The four best Chrysler inventions were Chrysler Town, Chrysler Country, Chrysler Plymouth Voyager and Chrysler Dodge Caravan – that completely took the market completely by storm. These creations saved the company from getting extinct. Chrysler competed with the American and Japanese cars but their creations out voted all others and gave the company huge profits in the 1990’s. a study of 2008 shows us that Chryslers minivans still holds United State’s market by 41%.
The styles of their vans were very spacious as the roofs were high. The van was created on the same structure as a car and even fitted the same parking lot as the car but it had its own advantages. It had a sliding door which was ideal for kids to stuff in the back; it was extremely airy and so roomy that it could even fit 4’x8′ plywood sheets if you remove the seats which other vans like Sedan or Station Wagon could do.
The first sketches of microbus looks like that they were drawn by a kid. It looked like a loaf of bread with tires and windows, but what is shocking is the date on that sketch; April 23, 1947. We see that in April 1947 the innovation had already begun.
The company started creating different versions of busses right after the war. They created many shapes of busses before landing on the final one. They compeletly changed the shape of the car when they moved the carrier from behind to the front. The car could carry 650 kg and was called Plattenwagen. This series was in fashion until late 1994.
While the factories were busy in making the Plattenwagens; the company was busy redrawing the shape; the shape which will be approved now was going to be the new face of microbus. In 1949 the prototype version of microbus was created. A better frame structure with good body was added to this model. This model was better looking with good aerodynamics and had varieties, some had the cargo part from Plattenwagen others looked like proper vans whose seats could be removed and attached easily to create more space. It basically resembled Volkswagen’s Beetle with four cylinder engines and low gearing system of type 2 with 24 hp helping it in moving around. Today’s Volkswagen is compltly different from the past. it got elobrated features whose foundation was laid in the 20th century.
The histories of the two most popular vans of the century tell us the evolution of vans, from where they started off and what their shape is now. Whatever the companies add to the innovations of these vans and busses, nothing can ever beat the style and coolness of the vintage models.
