Are common core state standards good for our schools? Common core standards are getting higher every year and students, parents, and even teachers aren’t the happiest about these changes. Standards have changed so much that a kid can have up to 6 tests a day! This begs the question: Why do we use still use the common core today if it’s so bad? Well, we don’t really know, this is something you can argue about, but there are reasons why we should get rid of this teaching system. 5th graders get a bit over average amount of work they used to get in the olden days before the common core standards rose, it’s not just the amount they get, it’s the work there being given. If a student wants help from their parents, they might not even understand it! The common core can use complex and over sophisticated methods. This aggravates everyone, not just the students, it’s the parents and the teachers too! Students get mad because of bad grades, parents get mad because they can’t help their kids, teachers get mad because they might not even know how to teach it! The new standards can give students anxiety, and lack of sleep because of the crazy amount of stuff they have to do each night! These conditions can be bad for your mental and physical health too. Schools should end the common core state standards for many different reasons…

In the past couple of years, kids have been more against the common core. What even is the common core? The common core or the common core state standards are the expectations that the state government says they should meet and learn about. The common core was made in 2009 and was meant to help the students and prepare them for real life. If you’re a student and you’ve been to a public school recently, let’s be honest, how much of the stuff you learn do you actually think you’re going to

In the past couple of years, kids have been more against the common core. What even is the common core? The common core or the common core state standards are the expectations that the state government says they should meet and learn about. The common core was made in 2009 and was meant to help the students and prepare them for real life. If you’re a student and you’ve been to a public school recently, let’s be honest, how much of the stuff you learn do you actually think you’re going to use in real life? The common core state standards used to be helpful, but the standards have risen and changed so much the information and the work is actually not helping us, it’s hurting us. CNN News has found that kid in middle school and up (7th grade & up) can be doing three times as much homework as you should. That is way too much, but with the common core standards now in days, this might actually be necessary. Homework and tests are what brings me to my next paragraph…

Homework that is given to the students can be too much. ¨The amount of homework a 7th Grader gets, should be 3 times less!” says CNN News. That’s a crazy difference! Imagine you have three times less homework than what you have today if you’re a student! Most students in high school can have up to an hour and a half of homework a night, says Edweek Blogs, if you had three times less that amount you would have only one hour and ten minutes instead of three and a half hours. That’s huge! Image what you could do with all the extra time you could have! Which brings me to my next topic.

Kids usually stay up late doing homework, but that might not be healthy. Teens need an average amount of sleep between 9 and 9 ½ hours, but then only get about 7 and 7 ¼ hours, and most of that is because of school. As I said earlier in the article, kids can get up to 6 tests a day, but that lead to studying. Studying can take up to one or two hours, depending on what, or how many tests you have. Ok so that’s only about 2 hours a night, but now there is homework and teens like said before get three times as much so homework can last up to an hour or so, but homework is what brings us to the other topic.

¨Less than 1 percent of the students said homework was not a stressor. ¨ says Healthline news. Stress can lead to something called anxiety, this is the worst part of all of this. Anxiety is something that your brain experiences under stress. Anxiety isn’t good for their mental and physical health, as it can cause panic attacks, headaches, dizziness, and depression. The amount of work isn’t the only reason for this anxiety, it’s more than that…

¨8 out of 10 teachers feel they need more training before teaching the common core¨ quoted by News Max. If the teachers need more help, how do you think the students feel? The common core only focuses on one thing, THE GRADES, the answers, and it can be very stressful. The common core should be focusing more on how the students think, and how they do the work, not just the answers. They have to realize that there are silly mistakes, they should still get credit for actually knowing how to do it.

On the other hand, some people think the common core is a great organized necessity they will need for life. Well, here from all the reasons, they should probably review that. If even the teachers hate the curriculum, how do you think that the Common Core is a good thing? Its someone else’s opinion, but still they should probably do more thinking about it.

So maybe we should get rid of the common core, maybe we shouldn’t, it’s still your opinion. Just think about all the facts and details from this article. We should all take care of these issues. That’s why schools should end the common core state standards for many different reasons…
