We know very well what are the elements of active and passive safety with more presence in current vehicles but I would like to remember them again because of the importance they have as a guarantee and safety of its occupants and, of course, the driver himself. The improvement in vehicles, regardless of the benefits that their manufacturers can give us when choosing a new car, necessarily involves the protection of its occupants.
A safety that contributes to provide greater efficiency and stability of the vehicle in motion, such as, for example, the ABS and the braking assistant and, as if that were not enough, to minimize the material and physical damage that may occur when the road accident it can be unpredictable but not necessarily unavoidable, such as, for example, the safety belt, the airbag and the headrest. These are key elements for your safety that cannot be lacking in the vehicle. So, in this post, I’ll be talking about the important safety elements of a vehicle. Let’s see them:
1. Antilock brakes or ABS system works with sensors that capture the rotation of the wheels, and before they lock when braking, send a signal to reduce the pressure in the brake circuit. When acting, the ABS system, there is a pulsation in the brake pedal that can extend even to the steering wheel and consequently can cause in some automobiles a vibratory movement during its trajectory. If we have no choice but to use the brake, we must press the brake pedal fully and without releasing pressure until the dangerous situation disappears.
In this way, the ABS must act immediately and if not, it is a sign that we are not getting all the deceleration that the tires allow and, consequently, lengthening the braking distance. Well, the ABS system allows the driver to keep control over the vehicle’s trajectory and the ability to avoid obstacles by turning the steering wheel, because while the wheel brakes, it does not stop turning. With ABS the vehicle is controllable even when braking hard as the system prevents the wheels from locking: In case, if your car loses the efficiency of your ABS break system, I’ll recommend you to sell your car and buy a new one because the break system is very important for your security and one should not depend on repaired brakes.
2. Braking assistant
Braking assistance is a device that works in combination with the ABS system and stability control. It is a help system since it tries to counteract the braking defect in most drivers who, in an emergency situation, act on the brake pedal with slowness or insufficient force. For this reason, with the braking assistant, it is possible to detect. Thanks to an electromechanical system, if the driver initiates an emergency braking and apply an extra force automatically and thus be able to increase the effectiveness of the brake system.
3. Safety belt
The importance of wearing the safety belt and its effectiveness even at low speeds is more than demonstrated in crash tests. For this reason, the safety belt is considered the most effective passive safety system ever invented, including the airbag, the deformable bodywork or any technical advancement of today. Currently the safety belts have elements that secure the body at the moment of impact by means of a spring or a shot (pyrotechnic tensioner) and aim to minimize injuries in the event of an accident. It prevents passengers from hitting the hard elements inside or against people in the front row of the vehicle.
The airbag is a device that acts in addition to or in conjunction with the safety belt and is installed mainly inside the steering wheel, on the dashboard and on the side panels of the seats. When suffering a front or back hit, in fractions of a second, the bags are inflated, which are interposed between the steering wheel and the driver or between the board and the passenger to avoid impacting the head and chest. In a front hit, the airbag is triggered approximately 30 milliseconds after impact. About 50-60 thousandths of a second later, the driver’s head already hits his airbag. If the activation of a front airbag is fast, even more so this will be the ideal airbag in order to best fulfill its protective function:
The headrest is a passive safety element of the vehicle and its main function is not to give comfort to the passengers, minimize cervical injuries in case of an accident. Especially in case of collision by reach because the body of the person on the seat can move sharply backwards, being stopped by the backrest of the seat. According to several car manufacturers the correct height is achieved when the top of the head is at the same level as the headrest. They also advise that the separation or distance between the headrest and the head, both of the driver and the passengers, should not be less than four centimeters or more than seven centimeters.
So, that were five elements of car safety that we wanted to remember today and that are key to our safety as drivers and passengers. The completion of the documents of your car is also important to run your vehicle on the road. Take care of your security systems and take care of car registration too and keep it up to date to avoid any unfavorable circumstances.
