America was founded by Indians, but noticed by the Europeans. People like Thomas Jefferson preach that the lands of America are free, but slavery and killing started on Indians and Africans. Because of this rocky history, the government can protect the American rights, but lacks to and can deny anyone’s right because of their strength!
What is freedom? The concept of freedom means different things to different people, depending on the level of freedom that you have in your life. Most people, when they think of the definition of freedom, the think of Liberty, which includes freedom of speech. The definition of liberty is having the ability to act according to your own will, if it doesn’t affect the ability of someone else to act according to their own will. Most rational people would agree that this is the way that a society should function. America was never a land of freedom, because of the hold King George had on them until the Declaration of Independence. America was never a land of the free because of the unlawful and cruel treatment upon 10 million African slaves for the work of labor. There are many thing the government can do to protect the rights of its citizens. One thing the government can do is to guarantee these rights in a written document such as the Constitution. The first ten amendments to our Constitution, called the Bill of Rights, guarantee basic freedoms of the American people. For example, freedom of speech, the right to bear arms, and freedom of religion are guaranteed rights.
The government must also protect its citizens when there is an attempt to take away their rights, in my opinion the government can protect the people’s rights but lack to do so better. In World War I and World War II, we fought to preserve democratic governments and the right people had under these governments. Sometimes, the government will pass laws to protect our rights. People who do things to violate our rights, like stealing our property, are punished when they break the law. There are many things the government can do to protect our rights. Often, our rights are being protected by the government. This would be, for example, when our freedom of religion or freedom of speech needs to be protected from government action. In such cases, the government does not really do much to protect us. You could say that the government protects our rights from itself by having created the Bill of Rights. But these are not positive actions that are being done by the government. Therefore, we cannot really say that the government protects these kinds of rights. However, the government does protect some of our rights from other people. For example, it protects our right of life and to property. It does this by making and enforcing laws. The government creates laws, for example, that make it illegal to steal from us by force or bilk is out of our money by fraud. The police try to enforce these laws, thus deterring people who would infringe upon them and then it does not. At the same time the government can do anything to us and that includes, taking our rights away.
