33,000 people are killed in gun-related incidents, in the United States of America alone every year (The Second Amendment Guaranteed a Civic Right to Be Part of the State Militia). This is a very staggering statistic knowing that the U.S. is only one country out of the 195 countries in the world today. This is due to several reasons.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

Shootings are becoming more and more common, guns are getting easier and easier to find, but most of all, the second amendment has reigned supreme in gun laws ever since the founding of America in 1776. Some believe that this is a terrible amendment to have our country live by, this group supports enforcing gun laws or even abolishing guns altogether. This is not the only side of the argument, though, there are opposers to enforcing gun laws that believe that there are already enough laws for buying guns and what you can do with them. The opposers also believe that we should focus more of our efforts on the mental health of the people instead of the guns they use. The debate on gun control is a very pressing matter.

Some believe that the laws on gun control should be stricter, while others believe the laws should be looser for self-defense and hunting. Of course, homicides and accessibility of guns are not the only topics the public focuses on. In America today there are around 300 million guns dispersed through millions of people and households (The Second Amendment Guaranteed a Civic Right to Be Part of the State Militia). Around one-third of adults in America say that they have guns. In today’s world, there are also mass shooting and terrorist attacks occur almost daily. All of this death is a terrible thing, but it has helped us learn from our mistakes.

The rate of these attacks occurring depleting at a slow but steady rate, and we also add new restrictions because of these occurrences. Both sides of this debate have compelling reasons for what they believe, and all of their beliefs ultimately lead back to the second amendment. To the supporters of gun control, they believe we only have ourselves to blame for gun violence in our country. In 1787, the United States of America’s Congress ratified the constitution that we still live by today. The original draft of the Bill of Right had the first ten amendments. Included in the ten is the second amendment, ‘A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed’ (Gun Control- ProCon.org).

Supporters have two problems with this amendment. The first is that when this amendment was made, our country was still weak and could barely ward off attacks. This meant that if someone did try to invade our country, we would need all the soldiers and weapons we could get. The second reason is that at this time in our history our states had their own private militias(The Second Amendment Guaranteed a Civic Right to Be Part of the State Militia). The militias were founded in place of a national army that we could not afford. It would make no sense to not let our citizens have guns if they are our only line of defense against invasions.

Even though our Constitution is a great place to start looking at the issue at hand, let’s look at what this document has caused. Supporters of gun control believe that the Second Amendment is the reason for all gun violence in our great nation. One of the reasons for these beliefs is that since the Second Amendment protects the right to have guns, it empowers people to buy and feel safe with that gun when it is actually a lethal weapon. Supporters believe that this is the reason that the United States is the country with the highest gun to the resident ratio at 112.6 guns per every 100 people.

With all these guns, there is a higher chance that the wrong person can get a hold of one and injure someone or themselves. Supporters also argue that the Second Amendment is the major reason why there are 33,000 deaths related to guns every year (The Second Amendment Guaranteed a Civic Right to Be Part of the State Militia). While supporters believe that the United States’ early revolutionary mindset and the Second Amendment is the reason for gun violence in the U.S. opposers argue that the Second Amendment is there in order to keep the U.S. citizens safe. Opposers believe the right to bear arms is important to keep everyone safe from the criminals that buy and sell guns illegally and will find a way to get guns if they were to be deemed illegal. According to Giffords Law Center.

‘The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (“ATF”) issued a comprehensive report in 2000 detailing firearms trafficking investigations involving more than 84,000 diverted firearms…’ meaning that in 2000 there were more than 84,000 guns that were illegally diverted while being trafficked in the U.S. alone. This supports the opposers claim that criminals have their ways of getting guns illegally and the Second Amendment is in place to protect us from these criminals. It would make no sense to not let the public have guns while the criminals, that will use them wrongly do. Not only do the opposers believe that the second amendment is there to keep us safe, they also believe that we should focus less on the guns themselves, and more on the mental state of the people buying the guns. According to (The Second Amendment Guaranteed a Civic Right to Be Part of the State Militia) more than two-thirds of gun deaths in America are suicides.

If we focused on the mental health of our citizens and helped these people that are committing suicide, the suicide rate in our country would fall drastically and so would gun deaths as well. Opposers believe that we overlook all of the law-abiding gun owners and go straight to the bad ones. In the country we live in today, you need to go through a background check in order to buy a gun, and get special licenses to do other things with it, such as open and concealed carry of a gun. Very rarely does someone go through all of this trouble in order to have the right to own a gun and throws it all away by trying to hurt another human being, without having some type of mental illness.

The argument for gun control is a very pressing topic in America today. Supporters believe that there should be stricter laws on gun control while opposers believe that there are enough gun restrictions in place already and that they should be looser. This debate will shape the future of our nation and even our world as we know it. It can shape our future in such ways, because of how much we depend on a gun to get food, hunt, and protect ourselves. There are 88.8 guns in America for every person, this statistic suggests that just about every family in America has come into contact with a gun. Whether that contact was bad or good may define our future.

The writer needs to make several changes to the first paragraph to improve it. The paragraph needs to start with a hook sentence that generally alludes to the thesis statement associated with gun related incidents. The statistic is adequate as the brief introduction that should appear after the hook sentence. However, the last sentence is not sufficient as the thesis statement. The writer needs to concisely yet adequately state the thesis statement and explain briefly in a single sentence what these reasons are. The evidence presented is comprehensive and adequately supports the arguments in the thesis statement. The work choice is effective and the writer’s expression is very clear. There are also no major problems in sentence construction. However, the organization of the essay needs improvement. This can be done by adding subheadings and by making sure that each paragraph elaborates on only one point.
