How did one culture influence the other and in what ways?

Culture can be defined as the characteristics of people belonging to a certain region. This includes language, belief, values, cuisine, sports, way of living etc. Different cultures have different features but all the cultures in the world have one thing in common i.e; no culture is static. Cultures of all the regions undergo changes with the passage of time.

ANCIENT INDIA

When it comes to wealth and richness, India is one of the most interesting regions of the world. It contains layers of cultures enveloped together. If we examine the history of India we will witness that after every few hundred years a new face, a new flavor of culture can be seen. Its history indicates many invasions and trading, each of which brought a new essence of culture with itself. Many believes persisted throughout the layers but the influences that caused the changes are eminent. The Indian civilization is considered as the world’s oldest and richest civilization.

INDUS CIVILIZATION

The Indus civilization, dates back to about 5000 BC, includes; Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. The cultures in these ancient civilizations groomed with the passage of time as their interaction with other civilizations increased through trades and new aspects started emerging in the cultures which were influenced by other cultures.Architecture: Indus cities are well known for their well planned communities, proper drainage and water supply systems and houses made up of baked bricks. These urbanely planned towns were quite similar with those found in Egyptian civilization. In Indus cities houses had a centralized large room which was considered to be the most important part of the house. This concept is quite similar to what we can find in Egypt. Another similar feature was flat roofs. Despite of being thousands of miles apart the architectural similarity hints towards the link between the two civilizations and their influence on each other.Trade:Ancient Indus Civilization traded for a better economy. The similarity in the ceramic products found in Turkmenistan and Iran with Indus proves how the traded products influenced the other culture. One of the many things found during the excavation of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro was seals which were used for trading.

These were usually decorated with animals and mythical creatures like unicorns, bulls and bison. The same types of seals were also found in Mesopotamia and ancient Greek. The influence of the cultures can be seen as both had writings on them, the seals include motifs and composite animals. YOGAYoga is a spiritual practice which is today practiced all over the world. One of the earliest examples of this practice can be found in Indus. The tablet shows a three-faced creature sitting in a yoga position. The other picture shows a Chinese artifact of a man sitting in the same position. This practice emerged from the Indus and influenced other cultures and regions all over the world.Textile:Earlier clothing was determined by the climatic condition. Later the use of stitched fabric was introduced which added into decorative elements. The movement of nomadic tribes from one place to another resulted in a crosspollination of stitched styles. Whether it was the use of spindle, the choice of print, the use of sewing needles or the style of garment, every region was heavily influenced by the other.
