When U.S. citizens go and vote for the President and Vice-President, on the ballots are the names of the Presidential and Vice-President candidates. Even though citizens are actually electing electors to represent them in each state, the electors that are selected are combined to make up the Electoral College. The candidate who wins the majority votes in that specific state wins the state’s electoral votes. Only 48 states and the District of Columbia, the party that wins the majority votes in that certain state calls upon all the electors for that state.

Advantages of the current Electoral College System:

The advantages of the current Electoral College System are that it encourages a two-party system (to provide different points of views), it encourages popular votes, it maintains a federal system of government.

Disadvantages of the current Electoral College System: The disadvantages of the current Electoral College System are that it could have the possibility of electing a minority president, it fails to reflect the country’s popular vote, and the possibility of Electoral College can decrease voter outcome

2 Reform Options that are the most interesting:

  1. Direct Popular Vote with Plurality Rule
  2. Direct Election with instant Runoff Voting

I believe that the reform proposal, Direct Popular Vote with Plurality Rule should be the process for selecting a president rather than the current Electoral College system, because it requires that each person must vote for one candidate of their own personal choice. From there, whichever candidate received the most votes from the nation would win the election. Statistically, more people vote because they have the idea that their vote can make a difference. Knowing that their vote can make a difference in the process of electing president, more people would go and vote. And knowing that they won by individual votes instead of majority votes instead like nowadays.
