Have you ever wondered how life would be like without music? Without music life would be quite tragic and upsetting. We are lucky to have music, it helps us express ourselves and connect easily with people. Music plays an essential role in our everyday life because it benefits us by making us feel a mixture of emotions, reducing our stress levels, strengthening our learning habits and memory. You might think we can live without music and it is true, but this would eventually trigger negative feelings and hazardous emotions. Anger, stress, sadness, frustration and anxiety are your common feelings. For example, middle school was a time where I felt lost and alone. I would isolate myself by not being with friends and always staying indoors, but this with time would only make me feel even worse.

During that time I picked up my first instrument, a ukulele and I started to play. This was when I realized that music was something I could use to cope with things when they weren’t going very well. Throughout all high school I was in the marching band and I could proudly say that those were the best four years of my life. Music is something that brought such a big group of people together and made us one. Ever since then I continue to play music every day. Music is therapeutic and allows us to get it touch with our emotions in a unique way. While listening to music you will wonder why you feel happiness, excitement, relaxation, sadness, serenity or anger. Different musical genres have different effects on us. For example, when you listen to nice pleasing music our brain releases a hormone called dopamine. Music works in our nervous and limbic system which controls our blood pressure, heartbeat and emotions.

Have you ever heard a song so good it lightens your mood and gives you this sudden rush? That is your brain on dopamine. Dopamine rewards us with a feel-good feeling which puts us in the best mood. When you’re feeling down you want to listen to a slow beat sad song and even than that will make you feel better. Listening to these types of songs while feeling blue will make your brain think back to your happiest moments that will make you feel better. Music will not only lift your mood or make you feel many emotions, it will also help your brain with learning habits and memory problems. You might not think that listening to music while studying is the most effective way to ace a test and earn an A. Well you might want to think again. For example, long ago there was a theory called the ‘Mozart effect’, which was said to believe that listening to Mozart while working can make you smarter. This theory seemed to have an effect on people and their IQ scores which made them believe that this worked.

Music can be used to stimulate brain activity which can help us retain information and focus. The best music to listen to when studying is classical music. This type of musical genre consists of a slow steady repetitive pule that is better for concentration and diminish stress. Classical music isn’t only known to help focus the mind or reduce stress levels it will also allow you to think clearly. Choose whatever you feel will help you succeed in future exams. Music plays a huge part in our lives, it even influences us in many different ways. With this information you will now know the positive effects music has on us and the negative effects it would have if we weren’t surrounded by it.
