As a person delves into psychology to gain further knowledge they may come across the idea of there being several intelligences. And, as they progress deeper into their studies, a concept of emotional intelligence may come up. What they will find is that emotional intelligence is the ability to be cognizant of one’s own emotions, to be able to control and express those emotions, and be able to handle relationships in a fair and kind-hearted way. Now, a scientific explanation is important and does tell someone what emotional intelligence is, but what does it mean, what are the specific types of emotional intelligence and, as with all intelligences, can we improve it. Every single day we, as humans, connect with people and build relationships.

Life is all about connection on being able to be in the presence of other people. If a person is too meek or to prideful they can sour another person’s day. In dealing with such arrangements a person must keep their own emotions in check as well as judge the emotions of their fellow man. I have chosen to focus on of these intelligences, which is determination/motivation.

Determination is one of my strongest assets and best emotional intelligences. From my youth my parents taught my that quitting was not an option. However, I will be the first to admit that sometimes I didn’t quit out of embarrassment. Over time I realized that it wasn’t embarrassment that should keep you from quitting it is pride and determination. So, I have strived to be the best I can possibly be and have kept it as a goal to always be determined about some goal. Every year as a learn new things, one theme has been a constant. Be it the SMART goals in JROTC or the credit goal of high school or even setting goals for my future in the 6th grade, goals have always been present. When you commit to a goal, you are constantly achieving and constantly working hard, determined to accomplish your goal and set a new one. My experiences with determination and striving to be the best aren’t always positive. My peers and classmates have always called me a try-hard or a teachers pet. I have always tried to deny it, but the truth is, I am neither of those things. I am a determined hard working person who understands that high school is not the ultimate goal. It is merely a stepping stone to greater things. Just a short term goal, and a means to and end. In school there are many distractions and people who can hold you back from your true potential. Being dedicated and motivated can be the key to a student passing or failing an assignment, a class or even high school all together. This is why I have worked so hard to be dedicated and motivated to stick to my studies.

Dedication is a choice and many students to simply phone it in, instead of choosing to give one hundred percent all of the time. Valuing determination and having motivation has made me a better person. This value along with my parents and grandparents has shown me the value in hard work. It has taught me the concept of an honest day’s wages for an honest day’s work. Because of it I am that most trusted person and I strive to reprove that every single day. As Chicken Little once said, “ Today is a new day”. And so every day is a new day to prove your determination and your work ethic. Yesterday is already the past, what counts is your current action, be it as it will your reputation could proceed you but do you deserve that reputation. I believe every day you start from scratch and you either have an attaboy day or a wasted day.

Emotional intelligence is not how smart you are or how big you are, it is who you are and who you choose to be. I choose to be a hard working dedicated and motivated person. It has helped me to become a better person and taught me to have a positive and fresh outlook on every day. It has also helped me to realize that your past choices don’t have to affect your life today. Just because you screwed up once doesn’t mean you are always bad. And the opposite is even truer, just because you have always been good doesn’t excuse on day of oops. So take time and think, who do I want to be today?
