Every day through the air conditioner there are huge masses of raw air. Over time, the filters become dirty, requiring cleaning. If you do not know how to properly clean the air conditioner, then the polluted air will again flow into the room. From the device to maintain an optimal microclimate, the split-system becomes one of the main sources of allergens. Add to this the increased noise at work and the unpleasant odor that comes from the device. According to experts, those who clean the devices twice a year are right: before the beginning of the winter and summer season. Consider how to clean the air conditioners from contamination at home.

Necessity of clean the air conditioner: signs of pollution

The speed of contamination of the air conditioner filters depends on such factors:

  • Dirty air in the room.
  • Height of the device placement.
  • Frequency of using the air conditioner.
  • Humidity level of air.

The device has to be washed more often if it combines 2 functions: air purification and its conditioning. Here are the signs that the device has not been cleaned for a long time, and it needs cleaning:

  • Noisy operation of the device.
  • The appearance of an unpleasant odor.
  • Condensation from the indoor unit.
  • Incorrect operation of the split system.

Indoor unit

First, before starting work, disconnect the device. Then remove the outer cover and remove the grid filters. Soak them for about half an hour in soapy water. Remove the accumulated dirt for a long time will be much easier. If the operation of the air conditioners is accompanied by an unpleasant odor, add a disinfectant to the cleaning solution, which helps to get rid of fungi and mold. Important! Pocket filters cannot be cleaned; otherwise the entire unit may fail. Just remove them and replace them with new ones.

Rotary fan

The next stage of cleaning is a rotary fan in the form of a roller. Its purpose is to run chilled air into the room. For this reason, a large amount of dust also accumulates on the roller. If you leave the fan dirty, then the blades will collect so much dust that the design stops working correctly. Clean the rotary fan with a soap solution. For hard-to-reach places use a brush.

How to clean the heat exchanger

The purpose of the heat exchanger is to cool the air in summer and heat it in a cool time. We clean the heat exchanger in the following sequence:

  • Clean the dirt from the top of the unit.
  • Open, cover, and sweep with a soft brush the dust settling on the fins of the heat exchanger. You can use a wet cleaning, but you should be very careful, since the plates are thin and easily deformed.

How to clean the outdoor unit

You do not need to remove the external block as often as the internal one. Once a year is enough. Most often, the outer part of the split system is clogged with dust, branches, plant pollen, poplar fluff, small rubbish. In the end, the dirty outer block breaks down. The reason is that accumulated contamination interferes with heat exchange. The radiator overheats and the compressor breaks down.

First you need to clean the external block from large particles of debris. Next come the vacuum cleaner and brush. The vacuum cleaner draws dust from difficult places for access. The fan blades are easy to clean with a soft moistened textile. Do this very carefully so that water does not get on the electrical components. To eliminate this risk, protect them with polyethylene film. Radiator plates are well washed out with water under pressure. It can be an ordinary garden hose or a mini-sink.

Should I use a cleaner?

If the plates are heavily soiled, then the use of a cleaning compound is indispensable. The final stage of cleaning is wiping the inner surface of the unit. You can connect the split system only after all the parts have completely dried.

Drainage system

A sure sign of clogging the drainage system is the flow of the air conditioner. The situation is also dangerous because the dirt filling the drainage pipes is a fertile environment for the reproduction of fungi and mold. In the end, the walls of the shell and the radiator are affected by the fungus. Those who cleaned the air conditioner know that it is very difficult to remove fungi or mold. Drainage is cleaned in such ways:

  • Washing with water and detergents.
  • Rinsing the drainage pipes together with air purging.
  • Cleaning with complete disassembly of blocks.

A well-water-soluble detergent can be used for cleaning, for example, a dishwashing liquid. Important! Do not forget about the fact that you need to wash and drain pan, because it is often the source of an unpleasant “flavor”, issued by the air conditioner.

Prevention of breakdowns

  • In order for the split system to last longer (manufacturer companies indicate a period of 7 to 12 years), it is necessary to comply with such rules.
  • The frequency of cleaning the filters of the indoor unit of the system is about once a month.
  • If the first symptoms of the air conditioner failure appear, contact the master.
  • Even with full serviceability of the device and regular self-cleaning once a year, call the masters to check the pressure in the system and additional refilling with Freon. From professional cleansing by the masters, do not refuse.
  • Devices with a built-in all-weather unit cannot be used at a negative external temperature. As you can see, there is no particular complexity of cleaning. The main thing is not to be lazy!
