Modern life is busy. You only have to take a trip to your nearest town centre on a Saturday afternoon to see that everyone is in a rush and they are not going to let you get in their way dawdling around enjoying yourself (seriously it’s the weekend, chill people). But it doesn’t have to be that way! It is important for your health that you do not over stretch yourself and find ways to take the stress out of your endless list of jobs. “But how can I think of ways to de-stress when I’m so busy?!” I hear you cry. I’ve got you covered. Here’s 7 tips to deal with your busy lifestyle.

Start your day right

Eat a good breakfast and find something to smile about. The first hour when you wake up will set the tone for your day so make sure it’s a positive hour. Some days this will be harder than others, but as long as you have more good mornings than bad ones your happiness should improve overall.

Make a list

Make a list of what you have to do. This may make you feel a little daunted at first seeing all of the tasks that lie ahead, but it will cause much less panic than if you forgot about a job you needed to complete until it’s too late. No one wants to be forced into a last minute rush.

Prioritise

You’ve got your list, now highlight which jobs absolutely must be completed today. The rest go to the bottom of the pile. If you feel good later on and want to make a start on the extras then great, but don’t try and force yourself to do work that isn’t required.

Get in the zone

Let’s say you’ve got an article to write, but you keep getting distracted in the office because the window cleaner is doing the window opposite your desk and Lewis’ keyboard on the desk next to you is annoyingly loud all of a sudden. Block it out. If you can go into a quiet room, do your work there. If not, put your headphones in, find your rhythm and crack on. You will be amazed at how much more work gets done in the zone!

Delegate

Has your colleague just mentioned they haven’t got much work on? Prime target for delegation, get in there quick with some jobs for them. To be honest, they’ll probably thank you as there’s nothing worse than having little to do but being stuck at work anyway, this way everyone’s a winner.

Take a break

Don’t let your mind fry in the heat of stress. If you feel yourself flagging, stop what you’re doing, go get a sausage roll and take 5. If you burn out, you’re only going to get less done at the end of the day.

Don’t leave your brain on standby

When you finally look down and see the prioritised jobs have been completed, rest. This is your time to enjoy now, so don’t start panicking about jobs you didn’t manage to complete or about the jobs you have on tomorrow. Worrying over tasks does not complete tasks, it only causes stress. Pull the plug, put your feet up and chill.
