In every war, information is a weapon. In a “war against terrorism”, where the adversary wears no uniform and hides among the civilian population, information can matter even more. So that asks the question, should torture be allowable while terrorism is involved? Torture is used all over the globe for beneficial and harmful reasons but it should impose more for public’s safety and precaution of a terrorist attack that can cause harm to the public. Torture can retrieve important information that can possibly save thousands of lives that could be in danger from an attack. The origin of torture started in the medieval times. Torture is the infliction of physical and psychological pain with the purpose of obtaining information or getting a confession from the victim.

“During the Roman Republic, only slaves and foreigners, as in Ancient Greece, could be subjected to torture.” These people got into trouble over little crimes for any reason to torture them they weren’t liked around the community, this is how torture was started. During the medieval times it was violent and blood thirsty. In barbarous times the cruel and pitiless feeling which induced legislators to increase the horrors of tortures, also contributed to the aggravation of the fate of prisoners. Torture was really common at this time it was used more often than now and it was used differently it more used as a death trial but it was also still used to get confessions and names of acquaints that are involved with the crime committed. The objectives of torture were to intimidate, deter, revenge or punish. Or as a tool or a method for the extraction of information or confessions.

The examples of torture done was the ripping out of teeth and nails, flagellation, whipping and beating and many more methods. A skilled torturer would use methods, devices and instruments to prolong life as long as possible whilst inflicting agonizing pain. Although the use of torture was limited through legal regulation and was justified as a means to determine the truth and not as a form of punishment, its employment in practice soon breached legal limitations. Torture was applied even if there was no substantial evidence and its use expanded from grave crimes to small offences against property. The use of torture spun completely out of control in the campaign of the Inquisition against heresy, cases of witchcraft and political crimes, becoming the principal means to extort confession. The records of trials conducted throughout Europe in the 16th and the 17th century testify to the numerous tragic verdicts reached on the basis of confessions extorted by excruciating methods of torture. Many of those trials ended with capital punishments.

Experienced interrogators and intelligence experts say that using torture and abuse in interrogations is not an effective way to elicit reliably truthful information. According to a statement by former interrogators and intelligence professionals from the U.S. military and other federal agencies. The challenge of interrogation is not ”to make people talk” instead, it is to obtain precise and credible information. “Though torture advocates have touted the “successes” from the CIA using abusive interrogation after 9/11, the Senate intelligence committee report on CIA interrogation and detention shows that the tactics were much less effective than the CIA claimed, and did not result in unique information that stopped attacks and saved lives
