I can remember fairytales and books that have told me that one person can change the world. Katniss Everdeen with her bow and arrows, Robin Hood and his quest to help the poor, and so much more. But as my generation grows older we begin to feel that our lives might just turn out like the Greek man, Sisyphus, who pushes the rock up the hill for eternity just to watch it roll back down. I feel that most people who when asked about how strongly they impact the world feel that what they do either does nothing for the world or does very little.
Historically I can reference individuals who changed the world, Joan of Arc, George Washington, Alexander the Great. Yet at the same time, I’m prone to witnessing more people who die, had little to no impact on the world, and are forgotten. This is referring to everyone else whose name did not go down in “lights”. Anyone reading this essay has had plenty of ancestors who only has a tombstone left for the world to remember them by.
But if the reader(s) only live in expectancies that everything they do will be for not, then we will end up just digging our grave and carving our tombstone all our life. It’s true, most likely very few to none of us will get a book or movie about ourselves. We won’t go down as stars. But movements, changes by generations and young people who care, those cannot be done without people like us.
The church, the government, and any other institution can only do so much. People change people. For instance, it can be hard to stray from the stream. To swim in a different direction as what everyone else is doing. Do you (the reader) think movements like that is because the government said to? If the majority disagrees then there will be outcries. Then the popular action would be to revolt, and not accept.
It’s young college students who can get the pot stirring. We are the people who can choose to promote good and bad things and start these movements that are hard for people to get out of. It was Martin Luther who nailed those theses on the church door. It was societies individuals at that time who recognized and chose to agree with him. If no one decided to stand with Luther, then we would all be catholic and the world would be different. The same goes for each and every president and the people who voted for them. Wouldn’t the world be different if other presidents were elected than the ones that history said were?
The world is changed by people like us, the educated. We make things “ok” or “wrong”, we share our morals and ethics and people are changed because of them. Because of this, we have a responsibility to be careful and have wisdom to our actions and morals. Because whether or not we think it, we do rub off one people. Like small dominos, we can move people until we hit someone really important and they change the world. It might seem that it was that one special person who makes a movement. But it was everyone in front of them (those that showed them their own version of right and wrong), and everyone behind (those that chose to follow them). One person can go against the current but many people can change it.
Our role in the world is to make sure we promote what we believe is good and right, and to get behind who we honestly believe in. Because it is the younger generations who can change the world, and we have this responsibility in making the world a better place.
