The age-old saying is “Nothing ventured, nothing gained”. A saying that is perfectly embodied by Mark Zuckerberg. To be fair Zuckerberg isn’t the first of his king. There have been many great men before him. Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Larry Page. He should’ve been just another apple in the basket. But something, in particular, stood out about Zuckerberg. Something that made his success all the more commendable and that’s because he’s relentless.
He’s a fighter. He’s a competitor.
Mark Zuckerberg is just about the least intimidating person ever, but behind that babyish smile and clear eye’s there lies a burning hunger for success.
Mark Zuckerberg born in New York, his parents Austria-Poland Jewish immigrants, having moved to America for a better life following the traumas of the Second World War. In a world so foreign to him, he made sure that he was the best out of everyone, even from a very young age. He excelled in academics, is well-versed in several languages, and was the captain of his high school fencing team.
He believes strongly in the pursuit of excellence. But Zuckerberg’s definition of excellence is not one shared by Mariam-Webster. He absolutely hated complacency. Mark Zuckerberg’s definition identifies with his beliefs, that if your competition is standing, you have to crush it until it stands no more. In the words of writer Jose Antonio Vargas, “Mark programmed the games that his peers played, and when he felt it wasn’t what he wanted any more, he would make something better and crush out the old one”.
Before he even finished high school, he had created an early version of musical software Pandora, with several tech moguls like AOL and Microsoft and expressing interest in buying the impressive software as well as hiring the young adult. Zuckerberg declined all offers. He wasn’t satisfied. He’s now had a taste of success was hungry for more.
Graduating in 2002, Zuckerberg successfully entered Harvard and became the go-to programming guy. He worked with some peers on a social-networking site that they named The Facebook. It was initially intended for just Harvard students, but the eyes of Zuckerberg grew wide as the website grew in popularity. Thus, so did his ambitions.
Now an internet empire, Facebook has become the 3rd most used website on the web, racking up more than 1.4 billion users. With 4 billion US dollars of yearly profit, you would imagine that it would be enough for the hungry Zuckerberg.
Innovators always lead to the arrival of imitators. This is how cassette was crushed by VHS, who was crushed by DVD, who was crushed by online streaming. Just as how Facebook had crushed MySpace (the empire before it), it seemed with the rise of Instagram and WhatsApp and more, the Facebook era was beginning to stall.
This is what separated Zuckerberg from all before him. He just will not settle for anything. He eventually bought out Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus VR, Snaptu. Not to mention a 3 billion attempt to buy Snapchat.
