The dust still lingered as a film on the new floors. The entire first floor was redone in Brazilian Cherry, including my walk-in closet sized bedroom. Getting rid of the stained evergreen carpet, my Parisian style bedroom felt almost complete. The fact of not having my clothes take up the stench of old dog urine anytime they would be on the floor made me ecstatic. My bedroom had one last problem spot, the boring eggshell white walls.
Something had to be done, these walls could not stay in this frozen tundra state. I decided to take the initiative and ask my parents if I could paint a wall; just one wall, that should break the spell. Trying to keep my bare feet from getting debris on them, I tip-toed on the shiny floors towards the kitchen. My dad sat staring at his laptop screen rapping away on the keyboard, “Dad? I was wondering if I could paint my wall.” He stopped abruptly. I thought he was going to either laugh or just say no right away, but I was perplexed at the response he gave, “That’s fine. On one condition, you have to do it yourself.” Myself?! I have never painted a wall before, let alone by myself! My joy overcame these thoughts though, and I quickly replied, “Deal.”
I skipped into my bedroom and stared at my blank walls. I chose the one right beside my bed; it gets every angle of sunlight. “What color should I do?” kept popping into my mind. There was only one logical answer, Tiffany Blue. It would be perfect. I grabbed one of my little Tiffany & Co. boxes and went to Home Depot with my dad. The paint was specially made and matched perfectly.
As soon as I got home I started right away. Moving all of my furniture to the left side by myself was an omen of how the rest of the experience was going to be. When it was all out of the way, I tore open the bag the clear, plastic tarp was in. The tarp whooshed when I snapped it to its full length. Next came the blue painting tape. Being a perfectionist, the tape had to be completely straight and right where the wall ends. This proved to be most difficult because the blue painting tape did not like to go straight, or without any bumps. I started to get frustrated like a bull staring at a taunting matador. I finally had all the sides taped and began to paint. The fumes engulfed my tiny bedroom in a matter of seconds. I dipped the roller into the pan and started to transform my wall from boring to beautiful.
Stretching my arm to get the top corner, I finally finished. After a couple hours of drying, I impatiently power walked back to my bedroom to strip the tape. Ripping each strip down in one quick try, I saw the room finally come together. I tear my bare feet from the paint splattered tarp and take a step back. It is perfect! The spell had been broken.
