Some of you are probably wondering, why am I showing you pictures of these famous persons?. Well actually they all have something in common besides being famous or influential. Can any of you guess what it is?. Well, All of them are actually introverts. Good morning fellow classmates, and ma’am Michelle. I’m Jayene and today I would prove to you that introverts make the best speakers. So what is an introvert? An introvert is a quiet or reserved person who prefers to keep their thoughts to themselves. This definition of introverts leads to the stereotype that introverts could never be great public speakers. But I beg to differ because for me introversion can be an asset rather than a deficit and I can give you 3 reasons why. 1st reason Introverts have good sense and sensitivity, 2nd they think deeply about their message and lastly introverts are phenomenal listeners. So the 1st reason is Introverts have great sense and sensitivity. Introverts know how to adjust based on how the audience responds and even assesses themselves while speaking in real time. As stated by Matt Pocock, introverts notice subtle social cues and could easily pick up on these small sudden changes. They would often have internal conversation with themselves.
These internal monologues are exhausting but this increased sensitivity of introverts is actually an advantage because they are more likely to notice areas of improvement when it comes to speaking. 2nd reason Introverts think deeply about their message. Introverts know that the speech is not entirely about themselves, they know that their purpose is to be a teacher, a giver, and someone who could be a voice of enlightenment. Knowing this purpose, introverts consider many things in creating or delivering their speech. In fact Liz Fosslien and Mollie West stated that in generating ideas, they tend to recall past experiences and compare these to new experiences. Through this, introverts are able to come up with great ideas, thoughts and lessons they want to relay to the audience. And lastly Introverts are phenomenal listeners. Introverts tend to shy away from being the center of attention, that’s why they prefer to listen rather than speak.
According to a study by Ancowitz, introverts have naturally good listening skills. This listening skill is actually a great advantage for introverts because they are able to listen and take in the opinions of others in preparing and making their speech. Once an introvert hears what someone has to say, he or she will consider the information and analyze it. The end result of this is a well prepared and original speech. In conclusion, even though society views introverts as shy persons or someone who doesn’t like socializing, introverts are capable of doing things society would least expect from them and that includes public speaking. That is because they have natural skills such as great sense and sensitivity, deep thinking and phenomenal listening skills. Which proves that introversion is indeed an asset rather a deficit. I would like to end my talk with a quote by Stephen Hawking which says “quiet people have the loudest minds”. Once again I am Jayene and thank you for listening.
