Confusion can certainly act as an asset when exploring arguments of inquiry. This relies on the fact that the argument is not simple, and has several explanations or causes. Therefore, the research must study this argument extensively before making a rational conclusion on such issues. Confusion, rather than certainty will require many more questions to be studied and researched. By doing so, the individual will certainly develop a clearer and more valid explanation to the argument. If someone knows a lot about the argument, they will do minimal work, whereas, if they are confused, a lot of research and digging will be needed to figure out the underlying truth to such topics. An asset is like a benefit; therefore, confusion is an asset when discerning the truth of the topic at hand being researched.

I feel that being open to all issues around me would be highly important when researching arguments. Often times, I feel that most of us are very closed minded when considering topics for argument. We have preset notions and belief that greatly limit what we produce, however, this only harms us from grasping the truth. I feel that one factor that isn’t very useful would be exploring freewriting would not be that useful. This step just enables thought and free flow of ideas, which isn’t necessary in the process. I say this because, we must do this when constructing the argument. I would much rather produce ideas that are complete and make sense after fully studying the argument, rather than having a page full of incomplete thoughts.

Elements of a genre can surely affect an argument in multiple ways. For instance, one genre element is whether it is fiction or non-fiction. If it is non-fiction, we can be assured that the information is factual and has data backing it up. However, if it is fictional, we should not believe what is being said as actual knowledge with data backing it up. Non-fiction is generally very serious, whereas its counterpart is not. The argument is factual most often in non-fictional. The genre can also be related to where the article is posted, whether it be in a magazine, newspaper, or online forum. The credibility and audiences who it is aimed to will be affected by such means. A prestigious magazine, for instance, will be more credible than a blog post of an argument.

The author should always have a specific audience and purpose in mind when they are drafting their argument. This is true because, without doing so, the desired results will more than likely not be successful. For instance, in the textbook, Trudie’s Freewrite article is geared towards brining awareness to the inequality faced by those working minimum wage style jobs. The author has that specific purpose in mind, and the intended audiences are for those who make such wages, as well as others who can relate to such issues. Without doing so, the author more than likely would not reach the intended results of such. However, by placing this short essay in a college textbook, the purpose and intended audiences can be reached simultaneously.

Truth seeking, and persuasion are extremely important factors when discussing the advocacy of an argument. Advocacy basically refers to certain recommendations or desired results that one wants from writing on a specific topic. Therefore, the author of the piece should seek out the truth, rather than lies. Because they will be deemed not credible if someone notices inconsistencies with their data and lose interest in their cause whether it is genuine or not. Persuasion should not be of lies, rather of truth. If the argument is noteworthy and genuine one would not need to use fake statistics or facts to gain support from audiences.

The difference between summary writing and practice believing are simple in reading to believe an argument. First off, summary writing is a way of believing practice. However, the summary does wrap up the main points of the text, it does not make one believe or not believe what the author is stating. Therefore, these two are different, an individual has to on their own accord decide what is true and untrue. There are many steps into writing a summary, and often times, one will place if they agree or disagree with a specific argument presented in a previous article in these summaries. However, it takes more than writing a summary to believe/disagree with a belief.

There is much value in dialectical thinking as discovered throughout the chapter. Often times, such thinking is that it can easily be abused as we see in the dialectical paradigm known as Socratic method. However, when utilized properly and the way it was intended, this method of thinking desires to continue to seek out truth and knowledge as long as there is questionable factors pertaining to the argument. For instance, one can never really grasp all the facts and truth about any given subject. This is true because the world is so dynamic, that there are always new discoveries to be found. Therefore, thinking in this mentality, almost guarantees the truth and knowledge to be in depth and valid as well.
