Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women. Lung cancer prevention is more than just avoiding smoking. More than half of the people who get lung cancer are not current smokers.

Here are a few tips that might help prevent lung cancer:

  • Avoid smoking: Smoking is the one of the leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for about 80 percent of lung cancers. If you have quit smoking your healthy tissue starts repair itself gradually. If you need help to quit visit smokefree.gov or text QUIT to 47848 from your mobile device. Grab some motivation to quit smoking by going through testimonials of ex-smokers and how quitting helped them benefit their quality of life.
  • Check for radon levels at your home: For people who don’t smoke radon is the first thing you could do to prevent lung cancer. Radon is an odorless gas that is caused by the decay of natural uranium in soil beneath our homes. Radon levels have been found in all 50 states, the only way to know for radon presence is to test your home for radon. EPA (United states environmental protection agency) recommends every home be tested for radon, tests can be performed by you or by a professional. Garlic has anti-cancer effects, a study done in china shows people who eat raw garlic two times per week have reduced their risk of cancer by 44 percent. Broccoli and fish are other foods that you can try for a significant reduction in lung caner risk.
