Have you ever smelled a scent that made you remember a person or have you ever passed by a place that made you reminisce an event? That is when you start to recall your memories. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, memory is the power or process of remembering; it may be events, people, or things that happened it the past. Memories are important because they help a person learn from his mistakes, reflects his actions, and they also help that person appreciate his life in the present time. Memories are important because they help a person learn from his mistakes. With a person’s past mistakes, he may evaluate himself and reflect on the problems that he caused beforehand. Having to recall his memories, he, first, should fully accept his mistakes and move on afterwards. Then, just like what Bret Easton Ellis said and I quote, “Life is like a typographical error: we’re constantly writing and rewriting things over each other,” he should start a new beginning and write his story again. If he had already done this, he won’t cry over spilt milk and would move on to avoid being emotionally unstable. Memories shape one’s future to a better one from the past. Memories reflect a person’s actions.

Actions and things that had happened in the past may be associated to one’s personality and behavior. For example, a person has had his heart broken in the past. Seemingly, he has been cheated on by the love of his life. After he has accepted this and moved on, he will treat that person differently, not the “love of his life” anymore. He will have a change of heart. Another example may be when a child experiences abuses and different forms of violence during his childhood days. As he grows up, things associated to violence may traumatize him. It may also cause physical and/or emotional disorders due to the traumatic experiences of that person. One’s behavior is closely related to that person’s memories and experiences.

Memories help a person appreciate his life in the present time. By remembering people and important events in his life, he also gives value to them. An example may be when one’s friend helps him get over depression (a feeling of severe despondency and dejection). That person will always have a special place in his heart. Another one may be one’s achievements, improvements, and negative/positive changes. A student, for example, had reached his goal to be part of the honor roll of his school. He, then, received the news that he is the valedictorian of the class. When he has already grown up, he would recall this achievement, and he would have thoughts on how he has improved and the process of change in his life as time passed by. Reminiscing memories truly helps a person give value to everything he has or everything he possesses. In conclusion, the power of remembering is important because one makes up and learns from his mistakes, evaluates his actions, and it helps that person appreciate his achievements, improvements, different people, and the negative and positive changes that had happened in his life. Looking back will help us move forward and succeed in life.
