Isn’t it ironic how the world has set criterions for both genders (don’t even get me started on the third gender, there are still people who refuse to consider the third gender to be humans!)? We, from our growing years, make it our mission to subscribe to the same. If you are a woman, you cannot have too much hair on your body, in order to showcase your femininity. If you are a man, you must have some hair (it is preferred if you are just the perfect amount of “hairy”) in your body to prove your manliness (as if having a penis wasn’t enough)! With memes taking on the world, and you deriving satisfaction, deluding yourself by relating to every meme, telling people to mind their own business, have you ever actually considered minding your own business?
Go on and tell yourself that I am no one to tell you that, or that I shouldn’t dare telling you to mind your own business but in within, have the decency to accept that if everyone would be minding their own business, I would not have been sitting down to write this article about what one thinks about men shaving/waxing their own body. But I am, because we care a little “too much” about every little thing and go to any extend to find followers for the same view, in order to cause a riot and get famous (becoming famous being the main motive, most of the times). In all this, who suffers? Not you and me! We are too outspoken about what we are, what we stand for. In order to show ourselves as strong, we never show how hurt we get when a little hair on the armpit has missed your attention, and hangs there, for people to judge you. You go on because you have to, because too many people know that you are strong, a rebel, and what not.
What about those who just want to survive the day, without criticism? I wanted to know what people feel about the idea of men shaving/waxing their chest and arms. So, I asked a few of my friends. The response did not shock me at all, rather confirmed what I mentioned at the onset of the article. Most of my friends said that it was a man’s “duty”(mind you) to shave nothing more than their beard (having a beard is mandatory, in case you didn’t already know) because shaving the body parts is woman’s job, and when a man does that, he only ends up looking like a woman. Duh! What were you expecting, humanity to alter its thought-process just because I am mentioning their view in an article? If they had known, may be they would have been pseudo-liberal enough to say that one can be or do what one wants to. Now, that is the biggest lie ever! One cannot simply do that without being criticised for it. Another one of friends had a very unique balance in her mind about it. She said, “I don’t like men shaving their arms or chest, it looks feminine, and I want my man to be a Man, not a ladies (so educated!). But if he has too much hair in his body, it would look gross, so maybe he would have to shave the extra out”. How can eliminate the extra, I am eager to know. What do you want woman? Decide! Meanwhile create that balance in your English, maybe. Anyway, I must admit that there were people who did not think that a man’s wish to shave/wax harmed anyone, and so they were least bothered about the whole thing (Yes! There still exists that humane trait in us. Go, humanity!)
Okay! Maybe I went a little overboard. Never mind. What I am trying to say here is that there are always going to be people who would find it distasteful, or awkward or feminine for a man shaving/waxing his chest and arms. But what matters, what really matters is whether or not the man really wanted to shave/wax himself. Is he comfortable? Is he doing so to impress someone (let’s just admit that we always suffer from that pressure of impressing everyone, even the original peg-heads we surround ourselves with)? We are a race, it is obvious for us to have our own opinions which may not necessarily be followed by all (rather, should not be). We can always state own opinion but we cannot take it for granted that one would do exactly what we ask of the person. Give your opinion, but don’t force it on anyone. We already are suffering from the shortage of oxygen, which makes it more likely that we may suffocate to death. Before that happens, don’t suffocate people with the agenda of criticising someone just because he/she desire to be or do something you don’t like. Remember, Global Warming is already doing that for us. Live and, let it.
