This is a 150-word essay about my first day at high school. The night before was filled with anxiety and excitement. As a student from a traditional Chinese background, I was used to following the norms and values of collectivism, frugality, and humility. However, my new school environment would be completely different, filled with students who had been exposed to international environments and Western education.
I was shocked by the level of freedom allowed in my high school, such as using smartphones during class, teachers dressing up for Halloween, and the traditional event of Homecoming. It took me a few months to adapt to this, and I struggled with my English class, but excelled in mathematics.
Through the process of adaptation, I started my journey towards independence and a new way of thinking. I learned to appreciate Western culture, but still identified more with traditional Chinese values of humility, respect for the elderly, and collectivism. Ultimately, I realized that being outwardly accommodating and inwardly principled is achievable if my “inside square” is strong enough.
