I personally love the StoryCorp program! Getting to experience stories from people all over the world is an amazing and sometimes life-altering moment. These stories whether viewed or listened to, has raw emotion you can feel when taking a moment to learn about someone’s story. One of the StoryCorp interviews I had taken a particular interest in was Patrick Haggertys. The fact that it was titled, “The Saint of Dry Creek” was such a great way of describing how his father acted towards him in this moment of his life. I remember watching this video on the StoryCorps YouTube page and it just stuck with me. I loved the animation style, the voice over by Patrick, and how he showed his dad as the completely opposite person he may have been “drawn” as. I felt like this story was able to show such an important message to viewers out there young or old. To those who are young, this story was able to show how you should come to terms with who you are, depending on the circumstances of course. Patrick, when telling this story, was in high school when he started realizing that he might have been gay. But because of the time period he decided to hide that part of him and thought he was especially good at that. To those who are past the high school age or are parents, grandparents, you could learn something from Charles Haggerty. For this time period, 1950s, hearing a father being supportive of his gay son wasn’t common. He didn’t directly say something like, “I still love you even if you are gay,” but through his powerful choice of words. He was able to question his son in a way that didn’t shame or belittle him. “Don’t sneak…if you run around spending your whole life thinking that you’re doing the wrong thing, then you’ll ruin your immortal soul” said Charles. The whole, “be proud and not sneak” lesson was such a touching experience for me. The meanings behind the lesson and how his father was so open-minded and understanding seemed to be such a gift that really made me feel happy. This story was able to show the feeling of love, compassion, and understanding through Patrick’s story.
The second StoryCorp story I chose was Sissy and Vickie Goodwin’s broadcast. When I read the description I was wondering what kind of story this would be and the picture that went along with it was just so adorable. I didn’t take this story in a weird, disgusted, or hilarious way but in a way that made me curious, as well as thinking it was very cute. The feelings I get when hearing this broadcast strikes my heart and I just feel so sad yet happy as well. Hearing about Larry “Sissy” Goodwin’s story was a kind reminder to keep an open mind; it’s like that saying “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Often times we make fun of those who cross-dress, automatically label them as gay or transgender, or some think they are just wrong in the head. When hearing about how Sissy and Vickie met and the hardships he had to face made me really feel so down. These two, husband and wife, just look so cute, happy, and content in their photograph. So hearing about how Sissy would receive hate from random people and even neighbors threating him was just a hard, tough feeling to experience. Maybe because I placed myself in Vickie’s shoes. I too always want to protect those I love, especially family. Hearing about his hardships, how he calls them “fashion critics,” and recalling about the more positive moments in his life made me appreciate his outlook in life. Hearing how Vickie described her love for him reminded me about the power of love, she was just so sweet! “I loved and I wanted you in my life, and I wanted you in our children’s life.” Hearing how they loved each other because they were able to help one another become the person they are now filled me with such joy. Being able to feel and experience love from a different viewpoint is such a new feeling. The story itself is so meaningful, especially with the topic of love. Acceptance and understanding was such a big part of this story, it was shown through the love they had for each other as well as Sissy learning self-love. I listened to this story over and over and I still can’t fully express how I feel about it! I decided to google some more about these two and I was so sad reading more about Sissy’s hardships but was glad that he was able to move to a better state. Along with that his friends and people who were known to be the conservative type, have been understanding and accepting of Sissy as well. Sissy and Vickie’s story was able to show the power of love in a way that was unique to them, and thankfully shared with us.
