Sustainability in simple words means that the present generation can fulfil their needs without affecting the potentiality of the future generations to meet their own needs. In a lot of ways, we are at very exceptional point in history as the innovations that we have made in technology make it so easy to overcome problems which were once very difficult to deal with.
The quality of life that humans are living now is much more superior and much more productive as compared to the past. But on the other hand, we could also be heading towards a tragedy. All this progress that we have made in terms of the exponentially growing industries and the economies have used up the planet’s resources so much that it has cost the planet an extensive price. As an outcome of our activities, many species that are having life today wont be seeing the coming century.
Global warming is already causing so many adverse effects on the planet and can affect the crowded places on the planet by making them unfit to live in, or can also affect the food production. Other concerns include that the rich are becoming more richer whereas the poor are still struggling with meeting basic needs, thus increasing the gap between the rich and the poor. Finally, computers which has made life for man so smooth, by helping us solve almost all our problems and helping in staying connected with people around the globe.
However, with the kind of progress in Artificial Intelligence, computer could soon replace human workforce in massive numbers and this effect will not be just in the workplace. Artificially intelligent systems will start to play a more primary role in day to day life and thus learning how to work with these systems is still an issue.Initially, Sustainable development conveyed only to be a solution for the ecological calamity caused by the over misuse of resources by industries leading to the uninterrupted deterioration of the environment.
The primary motive was to preserve the environment quality which now has broadened into improving the quality of life, both economically and socially. When it comes to ecological sustainability, there are two types of supporters : Ones who give the most value to nature irrespective of the human needs. For them, protection of the nature is of the highest concern which will lead to a balanced economy. The opposite ones believe that there no such constraints on the nature and that the progress which mankind makes will always make it possible for to repair the damage.
Sustainable development accords with the notion to improve the quality of life, thus, encouraging the stability between Ecological, Social and Economic aspects. Sustainability mainly focuses on three major factors: To bring in equality by fair distribution of resources and development between the rich and the poor, to take into consideration the needs of the future generation and design and approach accordingly, to understand the inter-dependency on environment, economy and society and to plan systematically taking into consideration all these interactions.
Considering the economic dimension, sustainability is thought to be accomplished if the welfare of the society is preserved with time. Economic sustainability implies wellbeing overtime in terms of welfare maximisation. This states that it is possible to achieve the highest level of usefulness over a fixed duration of time by using very limited resources. The usefulness can either be steady or declining depending on many factors such as the available resources and the progress in technology. Considering the social dimension, it is difficult to sustain human’s welfare without a fit habitat and also an dynamic economy.
The objective of human welfare is very clear but it is unclear to estimate which elements to take in consideration in the social domain. It’s co-relation with the economic dimension is very prominent but its relationship with economic and ecological together is difficult to understand. Thus, it is said that ecological, social and economic dimensions are the three pillars of Sustainable development as change in any one of the domain will affect the other two domains.Environmental issues can have a temporary or permanent impact on atmosphere, land and water due to the extensive human activities, the result of which may or may not be reversible.
Some of the areas where we face a lot of environmental issues are as follows:·Air quality and emissions:Air emissions typically occur from processes such as combustion and industry specific processes which results into harmful gases being emitted in the atmosphere such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and various green house gases which can have short-term as well as long-term effects on human life and can also decrease the life expectancy.
This waste water may contain acids, harmful chemicals, effluents from domestic sewage, food service and laundry facilities. If this wastewater is consumed without proper purification then can lead to many water-borne diseases which can be also fatal.· Biodiversity and Natural resources:The extensive operations performed by humans on land is not only resulting in the erosion of soil but it is also affecting the biodiversity due to habitat loss which results in decrease in the capacity of the ecosystem to provide us with sustainable amount of essential goods and also with clean air and water.
The Social, Economic and Ecological dimensions of sustainability are intrinsic of one another. A change to any of the one dimension can affect the other two. From the past decades, the awareness level has increased both on local as well as global platforms. Renewable sources of energy are more and more used now. While there are many problems which are still at large such as lack of access to clean water, gap between the rich and the poor, climate change, efficient use of energy resources, we are taking a very positive step towards sustainable development.
