For this project, the student organization we chose is P. A. L. S. This organization stands for, “Public Administration and Legal Studies Society”. The organization is run by students from the business, public admin, or criminal justice field and students who are seeking for an organization to join. My partner and I asked Roland Canlas who is a public information officer to answer some questions we had about P. A. L. S. and to help us understand what P. A. L. S. has to offer students at the University of Guam (R. Canlas, personal communication, August 28, 2018).
To become a member of P. A. L. S. the student must be enrolled in classes in the University of Guam. It is $10 to join and comes with a P. A. L. S polo shirt among purchase. To stay a member of P. A. L. S. , the student will need to pay $10 for each new school year. This student organization has no disciplines and is open to all students enrolled in the University of Guam. The meetings are held in room 150 in the School of Business and Public Administration building on the first and fourth Tuesday of each month. Advisors and Members There are currently nine members in the Public Administration and Legal Studies Society. The president is Ashely Babauta, while the Vice President is Louis Falan. The treasurer is Darlene Gatchalian and the Secretary is Gianni Toves. Public Informations Officers are, Roland Canlas, Rosania Olegerill and Larry Llegado. Lastly, Sergeant and Arms is Maria Dolojan. The advisors for this student organization is Ronald McNinch and Ansito Walter.
This student organization group is named after the Public Administration and Legal Studies, it is understandable that their mission would first be to promote interest in the Public Administration and Criminal Justice fields. Since this student organization is open to all majors at the University of Guam, their main focus and Mission are to show and promote what the Public Administration and Criminal Justice Programs have to offer. Their second goal/ mission is to create, teach, and learn leadership in government and social issues. They do this by going out into the community and public to build leadership skills and to understand and see any social issues Guam might have and how to solve them.
The upcoming key event for this organization will be next month on October 27, 2018. The event is called the Zombie Pandemic Challenge (ZPC) held at the School of Business building. This challenge requires students and friends to form teams and go through challenges and obstacles while trying to avoid zombies. P. A. L. S. is involved in the community through volunteer work with their sister organization, Alpha Sigma Honor Society. They give their time back to the community through a can food drive on Thanksgiving or helping feed the homeless. Their success story of current Lieutenant Governor Ray Tenorio being an old member of P. A. L. S. gives the current members something to look forward to achieving in their life. Mr. Tenorio sets an example of how networking and getting to know your peers, professors, and community better can set you on your way to running for Office. Benefits This student organization offers opportunities in the form of getting the students information on what the programs offer in the Public Administration and Criminal Justice majors. Members are able to work towards obtaining sashes for when they become graduating seniors. P. A. L. S. also gives back to the community and gives students opportunities to network out and meet other students and business people with similar interests.
Before interviewing for this student organization, we had no idea what this organization was about. This student organization is mainly promoting the interest of the Public and Criminal Justice degrees. Also, it is a way to give back to the community, one event at a time. It is a way for students to network with each other since it is open to all students. We are considering joining this student organization since it is a way to gain experiences in the School of Business.
