Waste management is a global issue that constantly increases with rapid urbanization, industrialization, growth in population, and development in terms of the economy. Waste is generated globally and directly affects every human activity. As the world proceeds towards an urban future, the amount of waste grows quite rapidly. Internationally, waste exceeds one billion tones every year (O’Riordan, 2014). The amount of waste that is generated is different in each country. Various quantities of wastes are produced by developed countries, unlike underdeveloped nations. The most appropriate and efficient way of managing waste in a rather hygienic form is a challenge to every nation globally. Urban cities are overpopulated and constantly undergo greater challenges in regards to waste disposal to an extent that it causes environmental pollution.

To attain the objective of this study, the method of collecting data will involve social survey instrument to help in generating data. Mixed quantitative and qualitative methods will be used in the collection as well as analysis of data. Extensive literature will be reviewed that relates to waste and its management. In the secondary data, field surveys will also be undertaken with intentions of generating empirical data through interviews as well as questionnaire administration. The question will be administered to an average of fifty respondents who will be selected randomly from various suburbs in different cities.

Another set of data collection will involve interviews with officials from the Municipal Assembly of waste management department as well as private waste management companies. Their perspective in terms of waste management will help the operation in terms of waste collection services as well as the challenges they face during their daily operations. A different set of data might also involve using handheld global position system receiver that will help in picking up geographic positions.

Literature Review

According to the World Bank Report ten years ago, 2.9 million city dwellers produced almost 0.64 kg of municipal solid waste (McGregor, & Simon, 2012). This estimation was done per individual. Currently, the number of people in urban centers has increased to an approximate number of 3.0 billion who generate 1.2 kg (McGregor & Simon, (2012). The general fact is that solid waste is an urban problem. The rates at which waste is generated on average tend to be low in rural places because averagely residents tend to be poor and buy few items. But more than fifty percent of the world population lives in cities, and the rate of urbanization increases quite rapidly.

The general aim of urban waste management involves collecting, treating and disposing of solid waste generated by every individual in the city in an environmentally and a socially satisfying method with the help of economical techniques available. As urban places grow, various business activities and patterns of consumption increase the number of solid wastes. At the same time, increased congestion in traffic have effects on the productivity of solid waste (Gandy, 2014). The local authorities are responsible for managing non-hazardous residential and institutional waste in metropolitan areas, while generators of non-hazardous commercial and industrial wastes are tasked with the responsibility if managing their waste. As of now, there is no method that is considered satisfactory which can aid permanent disposal of wastes.

Zurbrugg, (2002) observes that low-income countries constantly spend most of their budgets on collecting wastes, with only a few of them making progress on disposal. This is the contrary when it comes to high-income countries when most expenditures are focused on waste disposal. For developing countries, it is normal to spend thirty to fifty percent of the available budget on frequent waste management. Furthermore, it is observed that most of the urban waste in developing countries is uncontrolled, and less than fifty percent of the citizens are served. The key to ensuring an effective service that can bring greater satisfaction for the need of users in terms of waste management is sustainability.
