In my undergraduate year I attended work experience at a local community pharmacy.

Here I experienced a situation where a child who had just been discharged from hospital after an abscess draining. The parents of the child explained how the previous antibiotics had not worked and some tests had been carried out, to be able to find the cause of this issue, The results concluded the patient had an MRSA infection and she had been prescribed a new medication. The individual was prescribed Clindamycin antibiotics On this occasion the young girl was prescribed Clindamycin in a tablet formula. The patient was to young to swallow solid tablets. The parents of the individual were concerned the patient had a phobia to swallow tablets. They insisted she was given this medication in liquid formula. The parents also where in a rush to get their child home.

In this instance it was not possible to provide oral suspension liquid as it was not commonly available in pharmacies due to perceptible exposure of the active drug ingredients to the taste buds, this is a severe problem as the drug has an unpleasant and bitter taste. After explaining to the parents who were adamant that this is what they wanted I sought to it. With the help of other medical professionals I managed to order the medication. I consulted the head pharmacist and we then rang the GP who had prescribed the medication and explained the situation to him. The GP rang up the medical lab that produces medication and managed to get them to contact us regarding the situation. Between us as a team we resolved this and the patient was provided the oral suspension in liquid formula.


At first I had concerns what to do in this case as I have never experienced such a scenario and felt pressured to resolve the issue quickly and effectively due to the fact previous medication had failed and the patient had just been discharged from hospital and needed to get home. After seeking advice from the head pharmacist my anxiety and pressure where relieved as the pharmacist aided and supervised me. When ringing the GP for the first time at first, I questioned whether I could suggest an alternative this was because of a slight concern , that the GP maybe offended as my questioning regarding prescribing an antibiotic that was not available in the communal chemist and to ask for an alternative antibiotics that we could provide and questioning his prescription writing. I was nervous as I placed this question ensuring that I was not overpowering his decision. My ultimate goal was to provide a solution for the situation and be able to provide the best possible care I could for the patient. After speaking to the GP and getting the direct number for the medical lab I felt great within myself , as I could resolve the situation with the help of my colleagues. The GP directed us in the correct way, in terms off the medication subscription and this was very helpful as it allowed me to know the next step to take in regards to resolving the situation. I can conclude that this was the equal aim of the GP and the medical lab professionals as they provided the information I requested and a solution to solve this situation. We managed to work as a team and provide the great care that we could give to the parent and their child.


Looking back at the situation with the young patient I feel i responded to problem in the best possible manner and provided her with the best care possible. however due to this being a new experience to me never handling such a situation and being an undergraduate I had to refer to the head pharmacist for guidance. I was originally nervous when contacting the GP . Thus in the forthcoming situations I hope to have enough experience and training to be able to deal with these occurrences, without the help or aid. I understand that situations like this will help me develop, better myself and gain more experience and confidence in this profession and relieve the anxiety felt ‘fear and feelings of guilt often accompany emotions, which spring from a lack of confidence in how to resolve the situation’(Wondrack 2001). I understand I am on a journey to develop into a great profession, who provides the best quality of care. Developing myself professionally and have good knowledge to deal with any situation that occur.


Undertaking, this placement I did at the Pharmacy, was a taster for myself in regards to get a feel of the skills required to work in the professional mannerism in my chosen career.

Acknowledging the skills gained from my placement in the pharmacist professionalism, the insight obtained, showed the communication methods in between me and my colleagues and other medical professionals such as GPS, medical laboratory professionals to help resolve situations and come to the correct conclusion.

Considering this Anderson claimed ‘pharmacists are increasingly part of multi professional health care teams and are expanding there clinical roles’, C Anderson (2000) thus this is significant for colleagues in the workplace have the ability to communicate effectively and teamwork making correct decisions, giving positive outcomes in appropriate situations, the most meaningful experience providing the service to patients and their requirements are met, in the correct and professional mannerism. Working in a professional environment, under the supervision of qualified colleagues, it will allow me to acknowledge key information which will be beneficial at the time and in future situations , in order to reach appropriate decisions, benefitting the patients.

As stated by William (2003) ‘The prejudism between professionals who created hierarchies are hurdles that must be broken, allowing them to work together more efficiently, being able to provide a high standard level of care to patients’. Undergraduates can overcome the prejudism between professionals via interacting with undergraduates and health care professionals in a different sector allowing them to more greatly understand the different responsibilities and come to better understanding and respect of one another, This more productive teamwork will provide better care and increase the knowledge of each member which is vital as According to McWilliam et al (2003), interprofessional working is a very difficult task for healthcare professionals According to McWilliam et al (2003), interprofessional working is a very difficult task for health care professionals


To conclude my experience is that I believe I know feel confidant in resolving new issues in my profession and feel more comfortable working with other health care professionals. ‘interprofessional working is now seen as an integral part of service delivery’ (Lakhani,2008). which will aid me in my future I am also very grateful to the pharmacist allowing me to aid him and gain this experience.

Looking back on this situation, I can see that my main aim was to provide the patient with a solution and that pharmacies are becoming more involved as part of a medical team within the community to meet the health needs of patients. I understand that I could not have dealt with this situation in any other way and it was relevant for me to ensure that I discussed this with my colleagues and the GP, as putting the well-being of patients at the forefront of my mind is crucial, this will then break barriers between health care workers and together develop good quality future for the health sector. I appreciate that I was fortunate to have supportive colleagues, however for my future development my aim is to be able to resolve situations myself but when needed approach my colleagues with confidence not feeling feeling nervous.
