Politics, you either hate it or you love it. There is no middle ground when you’re conversing with others on this subject. A few days ago I went to my girlfriend’s graduation, and afterwards I went to dinner with her family. This is where I got to know her aunt and uncle. We started off with the lighter conversations talking about college, work, and who can forget the weather? Then around three quarters into dinner he brought up politics. Personally being a Republican in this democratic state I tried to keep my mouth shut. But, I was dragged into the conversation and we had a rather interesting chat about current events and our presidential choices. Now, looking back at that conversation, there are a few global issues that’ll always need addressing in the foreseeable future: morals and trustworthiness of a leaders.
For an example stories of human morals, which can be found in novels such as Never Let Me Go, shows us the path we’re going down. We are incredibly selfish at heart, evolutionary or not, it needs to be dealt with. In the future Feraco classes, a constant moral dilemma we will be tackling is immigration. How difficult should immigration be? What rights should illegal occupants receive in their occupying country? Finally how should racism be dealt with? As an Asian living in a predominantly Asian community, I personally don’t have to deal with much racism on a daily basis. But, my friend living in Texas, with a hard Chinese accent has to deal with a lot of discrimination. Stereotypes create divides between people, we must change that.
Finally trustworthiness of leaders, which is highlighted in 1984, will be heavily debated in the future. As we start to incorporate technology in our day to day lives, we must ask ourselves what do we need more of: Security or Privacy? Can we trust, “Big Brother,” with our darkest secrets? Should we take the risk? Or should we allow the governing body of our country do what it deems necessary for the safety of the people? This issue is not black and white, simply because we live in an imperfect world striving for the impossible. We dream of the day where corruption and ulterior motives is nothing but stories written in history books, but this is where our selfishness kicks in, a perfect leader will not exist. While corruption is less common in 1st world countries, ulterior motives exist in all leaders. This is what prevents us humans from forming perfect governments. Therefore we must ask ourselves, do we trust the imperfect?
The world will never be perfect. But we will strive to purge the chaos anyways; and by doing so we will tackle the world’s ever more malleable morals. We will also be forced to question our government, and why they request demand personal information from us? Ultimately we will be left with the question: Can imperfection spawn perfection?
