The health opinion survey reflected that I do not have a favorable attitude towards self directed treatment. Being a person that is self directed I feel the need to be in control of my health. When attending the doctor it’s my nature to ask a lot of questions, because questioning your doctor is important. Yes you should trust your doctor, but giving to much trust and not asking enough questions could hinder you in the long run, possibly financially and physically. I feel as though its important to be fully informed and given plenty of options in medical situations, over giving the doctors and nurses permission to decide what’s best.

Although I am self directed and feel the need to ask lots of questions i still have a good amount of trust for doctors, but i also feel like giving 100 percent would be risky reasoning bing, they are there to make money, and if i do not fully inform myself i could put myself in an unnecessary situation medically, and possibly financially. Which is also another reason why i believe in working to figure out problem with my health, if and when they occur, and work towards alleviating the problem myself before i take measures is scheduling to see a doctor. Based on Part 2 of the survey, Behavioral Involvement reflected that i have a moderate attitude toward informed treatment. I believe that unless it’s something serious and dethtremental it is best to tend to your own health rather than seek professional help. With situations that aren’t too serious, its is important to become familiar with your health and learn how to treat the symptoms yourself without contacting a physician. I do not feel going to the doctors is necessary because my common knowledge of myself/health history, outweighs/compares to a doctors professional judgement, giving no specific reason for me to seek informed treatment.

These attitudes came from how i grew up, I haven’t been to the doctor a lot in life, because it’s something we really couldn’t afford, and it’s something we didn’t believe in. In the beginning when the doctor was speaking to the mother and grandmother , about the child’s condition describing the illness and explaining the best possible outcomes procedure, during the conversation the mom was more worried about criticism from the grandmother and family, resulting from shame culture. She was worried that if something happened to the baby during surgery the family would abandon her for straying away from faith. The mom denied having surgery at first, choosing to go with her mom decisions of spiritual healing to close the hole in the child’s heart. After six months, more test were taken showing the spiritual healing did not work. The grandmother didn’t believe in traditional medicine or doctors, causing the mother to question her beliefs an openness to traditional medicine.
