Drama is the most powerful move of communication. It is seen as a way to improve young our reading and vocabulary skills. Shakespeare was one of the main influencers of this. He created drama as a way of communication while still being creative and making it something engaging. Shakespeare is mainly known today for his ability to be able to depict themes of human experiences the reason that we study him today are because of characterisation, language exciting plots etc.

So you think Shakespeare is boring? Well I am here to tell you he is the king of drama! Shakespeare wrote at least 39 plays in his life, yet my 2 personal favourites are Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. These plays both have a main theme and archetypal characters . These plays are both plays that we can all relate to today. With universal themes such as complexity of love and vengeance. These are both main themes in today’s world.

When you look at Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, there are many different themes and elements that are used to show the complexity of love. He takes the main theme love, and put it together with other different elements. For example language. This is used so that the whole play can come together in a way that the audience can think about it. An example of this is ’My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep; the more I give to thee, The more I have, for both are infinite.’In this scene, Juliet is describing her love to Romeo, yet he does not see love like this. This shows that love is extremely complicated and Shakespeare showed this in his plays so that the audience could relate to it. His themes are still relevant today as still feel love today and love is still complicated today so this play is something that a lot of people can relate to.

I personally feel that A Midsummer Night's Dream shows a great theme of setting. In this play the first scene is set in Athens, Greece in the middle of the woods. This changes the whole play around. Direction is used in this play such as “(enter Egeus, Hermia, Lysander and Demetrius. This not only makes it easier for the actors to know what to do but the audience can then see what is happening. Another main theme in this play is love, a subject that Shakespeare uses constantly in his comedies, this theMe is shown where Egeus is proclaiming that Hermia belongs to him and no one else “she is mine, and all my right of her” this theme of love is shown through the play and is still very relevant today. There are still arranged marriages in many different parts of the world where men claim their wives. There is also one-sided love where only one person loves the other and that other person doesn’t feel the same way.

Even though you might not know it, we use Shakespeare's language all the time. We quote him on a regular basis without even knowing it. Saying “stood on a ceremony”, ‘tongue-tied’ or “in a pickle”, you are quoting Shakespeare. If we watch every single play there is surely one character that we can relate to, such as the enduring love between Romeo and Juliet, Ophelia’s distress and Hamlets anguish. Shakespeare made sure he mad every single character unique so that we could pick one and relate them to our lives today. The language that Shakespeare used was very formal and the characters were very composite. His themes such as bravery, political intrigue, love and honour still remain today. In every play that Shakespeare wrote, he had a moral to it. This was so the audience could see that everything not just his plays but even in everyday life, there is a moral and that there is a purpose to what happens. Shakespeare's morals were not always a happy ending. This was a good idea of his because we can all relate to it. Not everything has a happy ending.

In my opinion, Shakespeare was one of the and still one of the most important people in history. After studying him for over a term I finally understand why he is still relevant and why we study him. He is still relevant for his characters, the themes he uses, his language and his morals. Drama provides a purpose for us these days, it can help us to act ourselves, say what is on our minds and just have fun. This is why I think that drama is the most powerful move of communication and why Shakespeare is still relevant today.
