Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), have turned into an exceptionally questionable theme here in our reality today. If customers stopped purchasing these products, companies would have no choice but to eliminate them.” (Sommerville, 1201).

A study by doctors at the University of Sherbrook hospital in Quebec found this toxin in the blood of women (pregnant and not) and also in these women’s babies. More specifically, the “toxin was diagnosed in 93% of thirty pregnant women, 80% of umbilical blood in their babies, and 67% of thirty-nine nonpregnant women.” This study was accepted for advertisement in the peer reviewed journal Reproductive Toxicology (Smith, 1). With statistics as high as 93%, the EPA was surely inaccurate. It ponders me how the production is still legal after finding their statements of the EPA to be false.

There has also been a lot of evidence that claims this Bt-toxin causes an increase in allergies and other auto-immune diseases as well. Another notable factors was that the mice also had an increase in cytokines. Cytokines are commonly known to be associated with allergic and inflammatory responses. Specifically, “interleukins that were inflamed are generally higher in humans who suffer mainly from disorders such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, MS, and even cancer” (Smith, 2).

Bt toxin is not a new concept to farmers. They have been utilizing the bacteria soil as a pesticide for several years. Originally this product was sprayed over plants, and was capable of removing before consumption. The new modern GM version is actually constructed-inside each plant. Each plant has its own individual spray bottle and the toxin no longer washes off. Since it is no longer biodegradable, the toxin is consumers rather than removed. Moreover, this new plant-produced version of the toxin is thousands of time more potent than the spray. This poison failed the World Health Organization’s allergen screening test (Smith, 2). Biotech companies choose to bypass these differences between the original BT and the GM BT. They claim fearlessly that since the natural spray has been used historically without problem, it’s completely acceptable to add it directly into our food supply, with no precautions. Even the claims of safe use Bt have yet to be peer-reviewed in considerations to safety (Smith, 2). I don’t quite understand the Biotech’s reasoning to bypassing the differences. They are completely two different forms of BT. Historically this chemical was outside of the product and could be removed, and now it’s inside. This extreme change is enough to demand new studies to be done.

A very familiar experiment on GM foods was titled the European Risk Assessment. The foods and crops were developed using a case-by-case, step-by-step procedure. The potential health hazards were marked and their likelihoods were resolved by successively large-scale testings. Expectation was that the knowledge resulted would allow ample certainty to conclude the likelihood of any given hazard in monetary use, since they used case and step- by step procedures. Assessments also rely heavily on notions of familiarity and equivalence, in which information of the parent organism and the implanted gene is used to classify safety. Both of these DNA are important to have. This way we can validate that the toxin originated in the GM product and not its parent. However, there could be possible residual potential hazards, it is predicted that these findings will be reported by management and control systems (Mayer and Stirling, 1022).

I have mentioned several disadvantages to genetically modified foods but there are in fact several advantages as well. Several of the most exciting advances in genetically engineered plants are non-food related such as edible vaccinations. The genetically altered plants have the possibility to provide edible plant vaccines that could be used for individuals to fight against an assortment of infectious diseases such as cholera and AIDS. GMO potatoes have been used to deliver immunizations against diarrhea (Faerber and Edwards, 1). In cases like these, I feel the use of GMO products is acceptable. When used moderately, the risks are a lot lower.

GMOs help fight against world hunger. It is estimated that a child dies every two seconds nationally from starvation, not even taking in to account those who suffer from malnourished and undernourished. The use of this technology helps generate more and larger products. So by being more efficient more people are able to eat (Faerber and Edwards, 1). Although this is a positive aspect of GMO’s, health issues associated with these toxins will not benefit the starving populations. These people have very weak immune systems from being malnourished. They will be at higher risks of auto-immune diseases. The cost of healthy food is high. Especially organic foods. People in third-world countries do not have the means to purchase such items.

“Polls constantly show that a large majority of North Americans would prefer to know if the food they are purchasing does contain GMOs. During a 2008 CBS news poll indicated that about 87% of consumers would like these foods to be labeled. According to a recent CBS/New York Times poll, some 53% of consumers stated they would not purchase these products at all. Consumers will have this choice because foods without GMOs will have a special seal for verified products” (Genetically Modified Organism, N.D). I have seen some of these products in stores, and find it to be a wonderful idea. This way people know exactly what they are eating.

Change must begin with the purchasers and it won’t be simple. On the off chance that we truly need to wipe out the utilization of GMOs in our nation we should crush the huge organizations, for example, Monsanto. This is not a simple undertaking to achieve.
