Would you let history go down in flames? That’s exactly what NASA is doing with the Hubble Space Telescope. NASA has decided to scrap Hubble and watch it burn in the atmosphere of Earth. Should we keep maintaining Hubble in orbit and leave it unscathed from the heat, or just let it fall to Earth because we have a newer telescope? NASA has used all the money they have set aside for Hubble. The James Webb Space Telescope will be a deep space tool with the ability of taking incredible pictures from faraway places. While Hubble has cost NASA millions of dollars, a vital piece of discovery and curiosity would be lost. It would be traumatic if NASA let Hubble burn in Earth’s atmosphere!

Hubble is the go-to observatory for people and researchers all over the world. It is a fundamental research tool that shows unmatched detail in its photographs. Through these stunning photographs, we have discovered a new perspective we could never have previously imagined: the age of the universe, dark energy, quasars, how galaxies form by stages of development, gamma-ray bursts, and even confirmed the theory that galaxies contain black holes in their nucleus. Hubble keeps returning good data, so why do we want to stop that? Data from awe-inspiring images has led to the publication of more than 11,000 scientific research papers. Not only has Hubble revolutionized the science of astronomy, it has also contributed in developing the advancement of astrology. The Hubble Space Telescope is one of NASA’s most successful missions and a technological wonder of our age.

There are many benefits to keep Hubble functioning. For example, Scientists around the world wait months to ‘get their turn’ with Hubble to take pictures. This impedes their research. Experts from NASA say: “A review committee made up of experts from the astronomical community determines which proposed observations address pressing scientific questions and make the best use of the telescope’s capabilities. Each year more than 1,000 proposals are reviewed and approximately 200 are selected, which represents roughly 20,000 individual observations.” NASA plans to trash Hubble, but why not have double the data? If Hubble stayed in service while Webb was functioning, scientists would get more work done because they would have a shorter wait period to get pictures. Hubble is the largest fundamental instrument that should keep studying the heavens for years to come. If Hubble was kept in operation, people would gain employment and college researchers would get more funding. NASA could employ scientists around the country and federal grants for research could be doubled. While the effects may not be immediate, scientific development can gradually change society’s view of the universe. Another benefit from saving Hubble is astronauts could be sent on repair missions. Not only could they learn how to repair a satellite and do programming, but they could be provided an opportunity to touch the astonishing history of the cosmos. Astronauts learn a lot when they do hands-on-training in space on a service mission. It would be a shame to let such a wondrous history and benefits end in flames. Don’t you now see from these benefits that Hubble needs saving from the destruction of Earth’s fiery atmosphere?

There needs to be public awareness of what NASA plans to do with Hubble. This issue needs to be taken to the press to gain public interest. The general public needs to know that even though NASA believes Hubble is costing them too much, the cost of the telescope is well worth the funding based upon its benefits and opportunities it has created. The people of the world need to remember what Hubble has done and be educated about what NASA plans to do with Hubble. If people become educated, then they can save Hubble by writing letters to their Congressional Representatives. School kids could also be educated about Hubble and write their Congressmen. What a valuable lesson for kids! Thanks to Hubble, we have learned so much about the universe that was previously unimaginable. It has been the one of the most successful projects of all time with the deep field images that are among the most scientifically impressive pictures ever taken. Let’s save Hubble!
