Sustainability according to JSPL

With an aim of “Enriching People’s Lives,” Jindal Steel & Power Limited has always committed itself to partner with the people for their sustainable prosperity through responsible industrialization. For an organization to sustain value it is very necessary to engage with wider range of stakeholders, understand their needs and act according to their needs continuously. JSPL has always fortified that each member of the organization perform their duties with spirit and strong sense of ethics as they have portraying themselves as symbol of improving the standard of living of people. Different organizations have different meanings of sustainability. The entire establishment of Business sustainability division was on the basis of 3 principles Conceive-Cast-Collaborate. Before setting up the business sustainability division 3 set of employees had sessions with top management of JSPL to understand what does the sustainability at JSPL signifies. [1]

According to JSPL, sustainability means to ensure their organization’s long term success as well as contributing towards building a better world along with it ensuring that organization’s growth is authentic and holistic. In JSPL’s business sustainability all the best practices are identified and the same are rolled out to all their businesses strategically due to their unique organization structure.

Social Responsibility at JSPL

Social Commitment is implemented via cross functional approach at JSPL which lies at the core of JSPL’s business sustainability. Their social responsibility is focused around 3 visions:

  1. Education
  2. Health and nutrition
  3. Clean India [2]

Education:

JSPL believes education is one of the basic building block of well-functioning society. They adhere with norms of India’s Right to Education Act and try to strengthen the quality of education through different initiatives. JSPL runs one university, one engineering college and one training school as part of their education initiative. The states in which they are running O.P.Jindal Community colleges along with the support of Government of India are Orrisa, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh. Total number of students present in O.P.Jindal schools are around 9800 and they provide 332 community teachers to 160 government schools in India as quality of learning in schools is largely determined by the teachers who are primary facilitator of learnings in school system. To ensure that no high performing student will miss the chance of higher education due to lack of financial funds or weak financial backgrounds they have started providing merit-cum-marks scholarships. They had provided scholarships to almost 937 students in the year of 2016-17 across India in all the schools under O.P.Jindal.

To reduce the skill gap between people from rural areas to those of urban areas they have invested in initiative called as O.P.Jindal Community College. OPJCC provides certificate programs ranging from duration of 4 months to 24 months to prepare job ready learners in market demand sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, etc.

With these objectives in mind, JSPL’s activities directly addresses to sustainable development goal no 4 according to United Nations which is Quality Education.

Health and Nutrition:

Clean India:

JSPL aspires to become a globally admired organization that enhances the quality of life of all stakeholders through sustainable development with great care for environment and needs of the society.

They have undertook initiatives to reduce air pollution, water pollution, management of solid waste and biodegradable waste etc. To control or reduce the impact of air pollution by producing steel in their factories they have installed high efficiency bag filters, dust suppression systems across various locations in different sinter plants, blast furnaces. Along with they try to produce power with the waste gases burnt and the heat recovered. Also to supress dust emissions they have fixed mobile sprinklers.

To control the impact of water pollution they bring back into the process the waste water generated during blast furnace, coke oven quenching and rolling mil by recycling it. They have classified and made their plants as zero discharging units by recycle-and-reuse approach for consuming water.

For effective management of solid waste and biodegradable waste they are manufacturing bricks and cement from the slag generated from blast furnace by reusing it and installing paper recycling unit respectively. Along with this they have also organized tree plantation programs by planting more than 2.5 lakhs trees.

Stakeholders:

Stakeholders are the persons or entities which are directly affected by the initiatives taken by the company or the projects undertaken by them. Throughout the life of the project JSPL actively develops and sustains relationships with affected communities and other stakeholders. According to JSPL, their business is linked with the stakeholders because of which they are mutually affected.
