Cyber criminology

It is of no doubt that the increase in the use of the Internet has its good and bad effects. Some individuals’ jobs are to defraud other people at the comfort of their homes via the Internet. This is possible and easier for them because of the heavy involvement to the Internet by major Cooperation’s and individuals. Different schools of thought define cybercrime differently, some scholars have said it is “The destruction, left, and authorized or illegal use, modification, or coping of information, programs, services, equipment or communication networks “. The new millennials have greater opportunities being presented to them by the cyberspace presentation of the myriad. This means that this same opportunity is also presented to individuals that attack machines via machines but as off lately started to attack humans through the virtual world but has effects in the real world. According to Nhun and Bachmann, “cyber criminology is slowly emerging from niche area that is often marginalized when mainstream criminology to one of the high importance “.

The emergence of cyber and cultural criminology consists of two unmistakable developments within its field. They both need to re-orientate debates within the field social sciences the response to the Theories and methodologies with regards to the forever changing and adapting process of economic, social and technological change. However, it is hard to ignore the fact that there has not been a great initiative to try use the resources, theories or core concepts of cultural criminology. Conversely, one may rgaue to say that cultural criminology has failed thus far to examine “culture “in that there has been a shift in communication into new media where a myriad of people has totally different identities compare to the real world. Hence, one can thus be of the view that a better approach would be for both cultural and cyber criminality to manage as that could be beneficial for both parties and let it develop a culture of criminological theory that is a little bit more affirmed to the technological advancement of a time.

New Media Crimes and Real Space Effects

Artists Robert Mapplethorpe and J. Sturges, for example, have faced very arranged campaigns condemning them of creating indecent or pornographic pictures. In addition, an art center showing Mapplethorpe's pictures was impeached on charges of "pandering obscenity," and Sturges's studio was searched by the local police and the FBI. Punk and heavy metal bands, and connected record companies, distributors, and retail outlets, have encountered obscenity rulings, civil and criminal suits, high-profile police raids, and police intrusion during concerts. Performers, producers, distributors, and retailers of rap and "gangster rap" music have equally faced arrest and conviction on obscenity charges, legal confiscation of albums, highly publicized protests, boycotts, hearings organized by political figures and police officials, and ongoing media campaigns and legal proceedings accusing them of promoting-indeed, directly causing-crime and delinquency. More broadly, a variety of television programs, films, and cartoons have been targeted by public campaigns contending that they promote crime, spin off "copy-cat" crimes, and otherwise serve as criminogenic social forces. This emphasizes on the effects that new media has in influencing crime in the world. This case study however also shows how crime is easier to control in the real world compare to the cyber space as users would be known and can be monitored in the real world.

A case study that can prove that overlapping of the spaces between cyber in the world is that of child sexual abuse by female sex offenders. According to reports and statistics, child sexual abuse is mainly committed by men however women do engage in this type of abuse except that they don’t go reported as much as men are. The anonymity of the cyber space furthermore helps female offenders to remain hidden and anonymous enough to violate and abuse children. However, it was seen that the female offenders do get assistance from a male colleague especially during investigations when using the process of neutralization. Some scholars have tried to understand the sake of hackers to try and analyze the potential risk propensity of hackers. However, because of the literature gap, in the study of cybercrime analogy, it is to be further studied. This is to show how many of the windows have been opened by the Internet that were previously unknown opportunities of crime that are challenges that do not have physical limitations like borders or boundaries. This is a challenge because it is hard to track or dictate its limitations or punish for.

Cultural Criminology

Outlined theoretical and methodological positionings, cultural criminological research and examination have developed in the past few years within a sum of overlapping practical areas. The first two of these can be categorized by an excessively simple but possibly informative contradiction between culture as crime and crime as culture. The third extensive area integrates the diversity of ways in which the changing media aspects construct the reality of crime and crime prevention and control.

The Internet is responsible for a lot of changes specially in the world of commerce, it has been so enhanced and unquestionable advancements in healthcare, education and global communication which was at a point perceived to be costly and limited. It unlocks doors to possibilities that seemed unimaginable. However, it is unfortunate this essay’s focus is in the criminological aspect of things hence the advancements more but more under how the same less possibilities of been used to commit crime in relation to the real world.

Conclusion

It is hardly possible to see cultural criminology independent of cyber criminology in this new media age as there is either a direct or indirect way. Hence for focus should be put in place to try and advance traditional criminology such that it is up to date and relevant in addressing issues of change in the communication and criminological makeup into the more contemporary. Thus, the convergence of real world and cyber space criminological theories and ideologies would be beneficial to the school of criminology and for the criminal justice system as a phenomenon.
