What the effect of Hip Hop and Classical music will have on grade 12 pupils trying to solve simple problems compared to one another.MOTIVATION One is always told that classical music helps aid the thinking process and that it’s the best genre of music to listen to if you are looking to focus. As I have observed the general feeling amongst pupils in grade 12 is that the majority listen to Hip Hop or a genre other then classical. Myself being one of those pupils that choose to listen to HIP HOP before I take part in anything that requires me to focus, whether that means a sport/ school work or solving everyday problems. I have tried using classical music as a way of increasing my concentration but my experience was that it put me to sleep or I couldn’t work effectively. This made me think what if the esteem of classical music being the key genre to achieve at your best effects. This served as a motivation for me to investigate.HYPOTHESIS Classical music will negatively affect students in grade 12 when it comes to the three types of activities required for them to do (reflexes, memory, problem solving) whilst Hip Hop has positively affected grade 12’s in the three departments tested.AIMTo investigate which of the two genres is better in aiding the thinking process in Grade 12 learners when it comes to simple problems, there reflexes and their memory.

REVIEW OF LITREATURE

The debate on whether classical music is better for ones thinking process in comparison to when an individual is listing to hip hop has been an ongoing. I believe this to be false, through the experience of living with teenagers raging from the ages of 14-18 it has been observed that students first choice music to listen to when they need to focus is hip hop. It has also been observed that when the tempo of the beat decreases to a more classical type it seems to make students lose interest in the task. So, if this is the case why are we told that classical is better for the thinking process?

The esteem that Hip Hop has surrounding it could contribute to the negative ideology it has when it comes to your brain activity, ultimately concentration. Research has shown that the part of the brain that is responsible for motivation, language, emotion, motor function and creativity are activated during an “8-bar’.

As we know all these things are needed to solve problems. Musicians such as Kendrick Lamar make use of fast beat counts and strong meaningful lyrics which activate the brains area responsible for creativity, language and decision making. This found research could prove to be the case when it comes to ones gained ability to do activities. In 2007 the USA track and field national governing body banned the use of head phones/audio ports. This was a measure to ensure no athlete gained a competitive advantage over the other athletes. It is said that music can be seen as a legal” performance enhancing drug” putting athletes in “the zone” (a mental state of extreme focus) which results in the improvement of the end result. This research will serve aid in the aims of the investigation. The above paragraphs support the stance that Hip hop will have a positive effects on the individuals ability to achieve to their best ability during the activities they are required to do.
