Kosovo is a region located in the Southeastern part of Europe. The Balkans have been a part of the Roman and Byzantine Empire Empires until Serbians migrated to the territories of Kosovo in the 7th Century. Amidst the Medieval Period, Kosovo was made the center of the Serbian Empire. Religious sites such as Orthodox Monasteries, including many architecturally designed structures that were important to the Serbians were constructed.
Kosovo is derived from the term “Kosovo Plain”, which was where the “Battle of Kosovo” happened involving a fight between Siberia and the Ottoman Empire in July 15, 1389. The fight involved an army led by Siberian Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović and an invading army of the Ottoman Empire under the command of Sultan Murad Hüdavendigâr. After the annihilation of both armies in the battlefield, both Siberian Prince Lazar and Sultan Murad lost their lives and the remaining troops of their armies eventually retreated, the Ottoman Empire then gained control since they had more men to spare in the east than those men that remained alive in Kosovo after the battle.
Kosovo remained under the control of the Ottoman Empire until the 20th Century when the Turks and the Albanians fought fiercely fought against the Serbian forces but lost control over Kosovo because of a battle known as the First Balkan War.
The First Balkan War started out as an alliance between Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, and Montenegro and was known as the Balkan League. The Balkan League agreed to ally themselves to liberate their kinsman from the repressive policies of the Ottoman Empire. It was also due to the fact that the Ottoman Empire was unable to reform itself, govern satisfactorily, and deal with the rising ethnic nationalism of its people.
The war started on October 8, 1912 when Montenegro declared a war against the Ottoman Empire, 10 days later, the rest of the Balkan League joined the war. The Treaty of London ended the First Balkan War on May 30, 1913, and the Ottoman Empire lost almost all of its European Territory, including all of Macedonia and Albania. Albanian was able to attain independence thanks to the European Powers and Macedonia was divided among the Balkan allies. The Second Balkan War began right after when Serbia, Romania, and Greece argued with Bulgaria over the division of their joint conquests in Macedonia. Greece and Serbia then formed an alliance on June 1, 1913, against Bulgaria. The war began on the night of June 29/30, 1913 when Kind Ferdinand of Bulgaria ordered his troops to attack the forces of Serbia and Greece in Macedonia.
The Bulgarians were defeated and a peace treaty was signed on August 10, 1913. Under the terms of the treaty, Serbia and Greece divided up most of Macedonia among themselves, although Bulgaria was only left with a small part of the region. The assassination of the Austrian heir apparent by a Serbian on June 20,1914 sparked the Amidst World War I, Kosovo was once again under the control of the Serbians, but occupied and under the control of the Central Powers until 1918 when the Allied forces successfully pushed the Central Powers out of Kosovo. At the end of World War I, the Kingdom of Serbia, which included Kosovo, would ultimately become integrated into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
In 1999, the non-violent movement of the Albanians have been going on for several years already, until finally, due to the lack of progress towards their independence, the movement increased to Serbian Violence which resulted to the formation of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), group of Albanian militants who fought relentlessly to secure their independence. After a civil war that killed approximately 10,000 people 10 years ago, the province of Kosovo declared independence from Serbia which led to the celebration of Albanians since they had long hoped for independence.
