For many of us, music forms an integral part of our lives. For instance, the type of the music we listen goes beyond entertainment to shaping our personalities. With several infectious grooves and stray lyrics, we can filter what we think, hear, see and understand our contemporary world. Unfortunately, sometimes the music can make us less conscious; more especially among the youths. Consider the Rap music which has been topping the music charts of the U.S since the 1970s. This type of the music is considered more informing, lyrical, creative, and a representation of cultural perspective. These are the same reasons why I like listening to this genre. However, this type of music is associated with immorality and social discrimination by social class. Similarly, these aspects are changing my taste in rap music.

'Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned'?

As opposed to pop music, Rap is founded more on lyrics than melody. About this, I like listening to Rap because of its poetic wordplay and creatively designed lyrics. These aspects make it possible for rappers to communicate and share their ideas. When listening to Rap music such as “Licensed to Ill” by Beastie Boys am usually convinced Rap music goes far beyond graffiti, break dancing, Djing, and emceeing to expression cultural reference and commentary on our real lives. Although at this point may argue that the Rap tends to glorify the American violence, am still not enrolled in this school of thought, simply because there are good and bad rappers.

Indisputably, most of the rappers such Snoop Dog, 50 Cent and Eminem are extremely talented. Still, most of the rappers have fluency and good control of their English. These attributes also explain why Rap is my best taste. In fact, since my childhood, I have been working to have control over my language, especially when am speaking too fast. Also, think about Anatomy of this kind of a genre. I find it interesting that Rap is founded on most valuable literary devices such as personification, metaphor, poetic conceit and metonymy. How they manage all the above aspects while switching their flow of sounds swiftly remains amazing for me.

Still interesting is how rappers tell their stories through the personal commentary. Through the music, rappers emotionally express their “unedited lives;” drawing much of my intention and inspiration. As if this not enough, consider the song “For Your Eyes Only” by J. Coles. The song is on my favorite list; also featured in New York magazine 2010 from its emotional story told about a friend who died at early 22 years. Through the rappers, we can understand our society as a whole. This also explains why rap is appreciated in foreign countries and by all age groups. Simply put, I like the rap music because it represents the cultural perspective.

Conclusion

However, there are critics that rap music is characterized by immorality and social discrimination. The critics are more intensified by the claim that rap propagates American violence. Considering my upbringing in a religious family, have found myself attentively listening to words and phrases making this type of music to safeguard my personality. Frankly speaking, rappers are not sensitive enough in selecting words in their Spotify playlists, iTunes folders and record collection. In addition, the rappers categorize themselves as wealthy leaving their punk funs with a question of discrimination. At such points, am presented with a conflict between my personality and music preference. If this conflict persists, I fear will change the my taste on rap music.
