Drainage and rainwater system

Among the key features of a building are the electricity, drainage, and the water systems. The study is particularly based on the drainage and water rainwater systems. It is vital to construct a building, whether at home or business premises with effective drainage and rainwater system in order to avoid the damage of the structure by water. Effective drainage systems ensure effective water flow from the structured roofing to the area of disposal, or from the interior of the building such as bathrooms, without eroding or damaging the structure. Among the key elements to consider in the establishment of drainage and rainwater systems is the piping system. It is important to ensure that the way around the pipes of drainage is accessible and easily identifiable. This will ensure that any damage can be easily be identified and fixed before it creates a serious damage.

Structure roofing is not complete without the gutters. A roofing without gutter will pour the water directly on the ground, damaging the wall or eroding the surrounding, which may threaten the foundation and the stability of the building. Guttering ensures that all the rainwater falling on the roofs is collected and channeled properly to the nearest downpipe. Large roofs will require wider gutters to accommodate the large amounts of rain water collected during rains. The gutters should either be made of polyester materials or aluminum to ensure that they do not rust when exposed to water and moisture. Materials made of cast iron have also been used in some structures as gutters. The gutters are connected to the down pipe by gutter outlets. In most cases, the downpipe directs the rainwater to direct storage tanks, where the water can be treated for domestic or industrial use. In other cases, the rainwater is directed through the down pipe to the gully (STATIONERY OFFICE (GREAT BRITAIN) – 2006).

Diagram showing Gully, Internal drainage and Rainwater directed to the main drainage system

A gully is a ground – level U-shaped canal where the collected rainwater eventually flows to disposal areas of the main drainage systems. In other structures, the gullies are closed tunnels made of ceramic materials. In most cases, the water from the internal house drainage such as the kitchen and bathroom drainage is directed to the gully. The gullies are fitted in a U-shaped down bend to prevent any odor from getting back through the downpipe to the building. This bad smell may accumulate from the internal drainage and bring bad smell to the building without the U- bend beneath the ground. In old structures, the gullies are made of clay. Modern structures have the gullies made of ceramic materials or PVCs (GREAT BRITAIN, 2006).

Among the maintenance measures of drainage and rainwater structure is regular checkup. It is very likely that the gutters, gutter outlet or the downpipe may establish leakage, especially in areas of heavy downpour. Materials like tree leaves accumulating on the open gutters are like to cause blockage, hence there is a need for a regular checkup and instant repairs to avoid extreme damages. The drainage and rainwater system should be basically used for disposal of waste water and not solid materials. Solid house waste disposed of through the water drainage channel is likely to cause bad smell or blockage to the drainage system.

Column 2: Recommendations on energy efficiency improvements for the heating and hot water systems

The money which a household spends on fuel bills, a 10 percent is for the provision of heating and hot water. Due to the changes of the cost of the fuel it is very vital for a household to have a cost effective and efficient heating system. This is the first step each household is supposed to take so that they may reduce the emission of carbon dioxide in the house. Before one decides on the best heating system for their house they need to understand the current heating system this is because households have different heating systems. There are those households which mainly depend on central heating system that is a radiator and a boiler while others use the electric storage heaters.

There are several energy efficient recommendations for heating systems. First and foremost the owner of the house is supposed to ensure that they have installed a more advanced metering system that shall be capable of reading how much fuel is consumed and also which in capacity of producing reports which is just simple indicating where the heating system is wasting a lot of energy. Also the following equipment’s should be replaced regularly depending on the type of heating system which is been used by the household; water heaters, boilers, radiant heaters and controls, pumps, air heaters and other system parts.

A household owner needs to seek advice on how they are supposed to manage the heating systems in order for it to be able to work efficiently in a way in which it should be. Improved hot water and heating systems controls needs to be fitted with better thermostats and zone controls, sequencing controls and more intelligent programmers so that they may improve its efficiency. They also need to be serviced regularly by professional. Servicing will ensure that your hot water and heating systems are safe and no worry of what might happen in the next minute. It enables prolonged service life and preventive maintenance. It ensure that the equipment are in position in which they can operate at its optimum energy efficiency therefore providing the user with the best heating service the wanted or required.

Household’s owners if they do not service their equipment regularly or properly it means that they are using a lot of energy hence becoming too harmful to the environment and the cost of operations are also too high and they are not too safe for use. A service of efficiency of the energy of the system includes the checking of the efficiency of combustion, replacement and running of some parts of the heating systems where applicable and lastly be checking whether the hot water and heating systems cylinders have the lime scale and this is most appropriate in the areas which have hard waters because this reduces the efficiency of the system. Suggestions and advice on how the servicing of the hot waters and heating systems is supposed to be mainly conducted by expertise or qualified engineers. In order to operate your system in an efficient way you’re not supposed to overheat, you are supposed to keep on checking for leakages, watching out for the water levels and also checking for the fuel. By conducting all the above mentioned recommendations means that the efficiency of your hot water and heating systems shall be increased.
