>Masculine City, Feminine Country

In Chapter 3 of Putting Women in Place, Mona Domosh argues that cities are portrayed as masculine while countries (country sides) are seen as feminine. Domosh supports her argument by claiming cities are masculine because they are authority driven and show that man controls nature, while countries are feminine since they are essentially the unknown or disordered. U.S. cities are considered masculine due to its rational, planned, and orderly nature like that of how cities in the Renaissance were considered to be masculine as well. Medieval cities were supposedly feminine due to not having a central authority and its ever-expanding nature.

Furthermore, within the postmodern cities, homelessness amongst women seem to be a common issue. Homelessness occurs among women due to many reasons. Gentrification has caused affordable housing to decline and deindustrialization left a myriad of people jobless without proper training to get a new job. Divorce rates and the circumstance that women earn less than men result in women not having proper funds to afford housing. Finally, many women leave their households to avoid abuse from their husbands which results in their homelessness.

The paragraph about homelessness seemed to argue that majority of the homeless are females which I would have to disagree with since I have been to Skid Row before, in which I saw multiple men that were homeless as well as women. I can see where Domosh is going with how homelessness might relate to being feminine after she described the countryside as feminine due to being disorderly. It does indeed agree with her argument that countries are feminine while cities are masculine, but it does not necessarily mean her argument about homelessness is accurate. The author does not do a sufficient enough job of supporting her claim about female homelessness.
