I believe this video is mainly focused around the McWane Company and how it has affected people’s lives thanks to lack of safety protocol. I believe the creators of this video really wanted to bring up the matter to the public so others would notice it. The entire video is based on random employees who were nearly killed, injured, and people that have quit or retired. In the end, they all came to the same conclusion that the working environment was extremely dangerous.

To start it off it went on talking about a Hispanic employee and how he received a life-changing injury thanks to working at that company. He went on explaining how he had times where he had to work for up 16 hours straight and that he had no control over when he was allowed to leave. Multiple people from the video told about how if they wanted to go to the bathroom generally they had to do it right there on the spot. If they chose to ignore or purposely be disobedient they would be fired. From what I could tell the people who were working there, it wasn’t out of choice but more of that they didn’t have another job to go to. In the end, the job they had at the company still paid extremely well which is most likely how they kept the people coming back all those years. In the sad truth is a lot of people need money in the world and end up getting put through jobs like these just so they can make enough to survive. Back to the Hispanic employee, after realizing that something was severally wrong with his back he begged the personal or higher-ups to see a doctor or have some time off to figure out what happened. They granted him an X-ray but despite them actually giving the X-ray they never did tell the employee what was wrong with him and merely told him to go back to work. It wasn’t until 25 days later the employee went to figure out what was wrong with his back and found out that he had a broken back. The higher-ups were told after questioning that they weren’t allowed to tell him what was wrong with because that meant he would have an excuse not to work. In this case, not working means the employee is utterly useless and or unneeded.

Another case is a general manager for a pipe manufacturer of the McWayne Company. In this case, he wasn’t hurt or had anything bad to him but he went through what is very common now called the Bystander effect. He had worked there for 25 years but never said anything about the working conditions because he was always waiting for someone else to step up. As he stated from the video, “I never thought I would be the one to have to step up. ” In truth, he probably would’ve never stepped up in the first place if the harsh conditions didn’t get to him first. To elaborate on that, he had been working there for 25 years and not once did he skip a day of work to take time off. One day he asked for the day off and gave an excuse of him being a veteran to get the time off. He never did get the time off and instead was treated like an obstacle that needed to be taken care of. From what it looked like, that was his tipping point to where he couldn’t hold anymore and finally chose to quit that job. Where he now exploits all the things that have happened in that company. As for the last case in which I found to be most interesting was the safety manager at the pipe manufacture. He was fired for legitimate reasons for getting involved with drugs outside of the workplace but to best explain his background. He had never worked as a safety manager before, had zero help to ensure the safety of those who worked there, and finally had no authority over production if something looked off. It was almost as if they hired this man as a standing sign for the OSHA investigators. It was never his fault in the truth at hand, he merely did what everyone else was doing there as a way to make money. He explained, that he did try his best but in the end, there’s just so much going on for only one person to handle. Not only that if there came a case where he did decide to stop manufacturing he would be threatened that if the company doesn’t make the expected outcome for this month it would be your fault. In the end, he had no choice but to continue with allowing the dangerous working environment and hope there are fewer accidents.

To conclude and continue from where I last left off, the main reason they chose to hire a man with no experience is that the higher-ups wanted more production. To show how much power the higher-ups of the company had, whenever the OSHA did do their inspections they merely told the safety manager to let them do as they please. Don’t admit to any hazards and let them do their job, will pay the fines after. In the end, they did have the power, the fines were nothing but pocket change when they knew they could just continue taking the risk without any worries of having to take any serious changes that would slow down production. To be honest, I found this video to be very interesting and lifelike. I first and the only job I had was similar to this in some cases. It was a job that nobody would think that something bad is happening in the background and they paid a lot to just work in that environment. I personally never had any serious injurious besides some with my fingers but it never mattered to me at the time because I needed money. That’s why there will always be company’s like this in the world and no matter how much OSHA or other safety organizations try to fix the issues I don’t believe there will be a dramatic change for a while.
