A committee is a body consisting of one or more individuals that are subordinate to a deliberative group. The assembly usually sends issues into a committee in an attempt to explore them more fully. Departments in an organization have organized committees that are in charge of the specific matters that pertain to the departments. There are four common committees in any organization. The executive committee that is made up of the superiors in the organisation. It is mandated to make decisions on matters that affect the organization as a whole; the audit committee is also an important part of the finance department. It has a major role of auditing the books of finance; the remuneration committee is a composed of individuals from the human resource department and finance department (Tsui, 2003, p. 14). The committee is mandated to be in charge of wages and salaries.
Our discussion will be based on the health care committee of a hospital as one of the major committees in a healthcare facility with a keen interest in their decision making process. The committee is charged with the responsibility of overseeing the issues that relate to health care services, long term care and developmental disabilities. The committee is also in charge of both the public and the private healthcare including programs carried out by the hospital such as basic health care plan, public health issues and private insurance.
I had the chance to attend a meeting of health committee of Sharp Memorial. The committee holds a meeting once a month. The committee has jurisdiction to bills that relate to the public, mental health, drug and alcohol abuse, managed health and health insurance and related institutions. The committee was made up of fifteen members with the top most being the chair, vice chair and the secretary respectively. The chair of the committee was tasked with the responsibility of identifying potential leaders to the committee. The secretary of the committee needed not to be a member of the board. The major responsibility of the secretary was to keep minutes of the committee meetings.
The main agenda for discussion for the day was on how to improve medical care services provided by the hospital to the patients. During the discussion, I realised that every member positively and actively participated in the discussion as the chair presided over the meeting. The process that the committee used to arrive at the ultimate decision could be summarised as follows:
Identifying the solution
The committee realised they need a make a decision. They tried to clearly define the nature of the decision they need to make. The ultimate decision needed to be cost effective and efficient.
Gathering of relevant information
Experts from the various professional fields gave in their input on factors that affected the decision.
Identification of alternatives
As the members discussed among themselves on how to achieve their objective, they also identified the various path of action to be taken
Weighing of evidence
With the major objective being improving medical care services provided by the hospital to the patients, the members weighed all the alternatives against the set object and chose on the most effective.
The members were professionals skilled in different fields and thus every member’s input was very significant in arriving at an ultimate decision. The motion seemed to be in favour of the health experts as those who were well skilled in the health field participated more in the discussion. They based more of their argument on issues that related to health and the impact of the improvement of the services to the patients and the hospital as a whole .
The financial experts tried to find a way in which they can achieve the goal in the most economical way possible. The committee arrived at a mutual conclusion and the meeting was ended. It was evident from my observations that governance of the committee was shared and that the decision making process was a responsibility of every member.
