Food is one of the biggest staples that holds together the human existence. Without food, gaining nourishment is almost impossible for a normal human being. For individuals with health conditions such as diabetes and high-blood pressure, consumption can be anything but simple. For instance, individuals with diabetes are extremely “likely to experience the blood sugar consequences, frustration, and sluggishness for hours later”. These symptoms are a result of poor dieting and a negligent attitude towards health concerns. However, some diabetes patients believe that they can maintain a healthy lifestyle while continuing to eat the foods that they enjoy. Several diabetic individuals agree that “avoiding dessert is often hard, because we’re all hardwired to love sweet things and be social, and dessert usually appeals to both”. Most candies and confections are considered off limits for diabetic individuals, but there are other options. By gaining a better understanding of diabetes, the individuals with the condition can learn to lead a decent lifestyle. In some instances, these lifestyles can include so many interesting delicacies, including deserts.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is one of the largest growing non-communicable diseases in America. Despite the large amount of awareness that diabetes has gained over several years of research, there is still not a fully functional cure for the disease. Diabetes has a wide variety of the principle health condition. For example, “the most common types of diabetes are type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes”. Each form of diabetes develops because of the same basic issue. That issue rests within the body of the individual that has contracted diabetes. The basics of the condition has to do with insulin and how sensitive the body is to it. Furthermore, “diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. Blood glucose is your main source of energy and comes from the food you eat”. Blood glucose plays an integral part in the bodies day to day activities. The human body needs energy if it is to function properly. Therefore, diabetes is a direct deterrent away from an individual’s health. Diabetes is also referred to as “a touch of sugar” or “borderline diabetes.” These terms suggest that someone doesn’t really have diabetes or has a less serious case, but every case of diabetes is serious”. Because each case of diabetes is considered serious, it should be treated as such. If left untreated, “over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause health problems. Although diabetes has no cure, you can take steps to manage your diabetes and stay healthy”. In fact, for many patients, diabetes treatment has become a relatively popular lifestyle. As more research surfaces, there are more opportunities for diabetics to thrive. Thriving with diabetes is even better if the patients are allowed to eat desserts.

Desert Alternatives

In the diabetic world, the contents of the foods that diabetic patients eat are considered to be very important. Basically, every compound and chemical that is found within any given food element needs to be examined by the diabetic patient consuming that product. Desert foods are notorious for having high concentrations of sugar. However, there are alternatives to eating deserts such as baked goods or candies. There are foods that “have a much lower impact on blood sugar than traditional desserts, particularly raspberries and strawberries”. Fruit is well known for being colorful and sweet, just as most deserts. In fact, fruits were considered deserts among the higher classes during the 17th century. Still, fruits do not always seem to satisfy the appetites of every diabetic patient. Unprocessed fruit already has a decent concentration of sugar, meaning that insulin is needed to break down these compounds. For so many diabetics, “frozen fruit is a convenient dessert, since it lasts a long time, is filling, and is sweet enough. If buying frozen, make sure no sugar has been added – the only ingredient should be the berries”. There are no shortcuts when it comes to proper diabetes management. However, there are opportunities to cheat the system on occasion. For deserts besides fruit, the substitution of less healthy ingredients for more beneficial ingredients can enhance the life of a person with diabetes. When making “baked goods using almond flour or coconut flour. they have a lower impact on blood sugar than “traditional” baked goods”. Diabetes is not always easy to manage, but it can get better over time. Many inexperienced diabetic patients face the issue of adjusting to their new diets and treatments. Even with this issue, diabetics still have more options to thrive.

Avoid Eating Desert if Necessary

Even for individuals with diabetes, eating is a simple and instinctual action. The digestive system does not end after the food enters an individuals mouth. When a diabetic person consumes more sugar than their insulin levels will allow, there can be some serious repercussions. For diabetics, avoiding deserts can be an issue. To avoid further damage to the body, diabetics must make some serious eating choices. There are several ways for a diabetic person to avoid eating deserts. When eating “a more filling dinner – go big on vegetables, drinks, and soup. load up on vegetables at dinner, usually by replacing normal side dishes with veggies (stir fry, cauliflower rice, zoodles) or having an enormous salad”. Water and vegetables are the healthiest eating choices among diabetic patients. Water for instance, can trick the stomach into believing that it is full. By doing this, the body has less of a desire to overeat. Researchers believe that diabetics should “drink a lot of liquids at dinner, including sparkling water with a lime/lemon and soup made with Better Than Bouillon paste and (optional) miso paste”. Many patients with diabetes object to going without eating for certain periods of time. For other diabetic patients, the concept of “out of sight, out of mind” has saved their lives on countless occasions. Many professionals suggest trying the following: “Putting desserts in hard-to-reach places can also work: on the top shelf of the pantry requiring a chair to access; in a hard-to-open jar or a bag with a tiny pouring slot; in the basement cupboard”.

Diabetes used to be an obscure health condition that not many individuals understood at the time. In modern times, much awareness has been spread towards diabetes and the dieting lifestyles that the disease created. Researches agree that an individual with diabetes should “ask a loved one to partner with you in a quest to eat less dessert. It’s so motivational – and so much easier – when someone in the house joins a shared food mission”. Cooking healthy deserts with someone is a creative way to defeat the negative aspects of diabetes. People have been helping each other since the dawn of manhood and humans pride themselves on that fact. In some cases, all that diabetes patients really need is a positive support system to keep them away from bad influences. It can be seen that there are “so many people who want to eat less dessert or junk food but find it impossible when it is around the house. Loved ones can unintentionally sabotage food efforts, but they can also be amazing partners – often, it just takes some honesty, a bit of courage, and a non-judgmental ask”. Asking for help is the first step towards leading a more positive life. Overall, desserts are meant to be treats enjoyed by everyone. In fact, diabetics do not actually need to eat dessert to enjoy it with someone else.
