Organizational Behavior in the Workplace

Organizational behavior is the study of how individuals in a group or on their own function in an organization. It focuses on comprehension, the completion of tasks, and how well people work with others. Knowledge of organizational behavior assists management teams in understanding and utilizing the skills their employees provide. Interpersonal skills, problem-solving, adaptability, leadership, and management skills are all qualities individuals possess that contribute to an organization’s success. When applied regularly, it delivers benefits like increased productivity, teamwork, customer satisfaction, and so much more. Moreover, employees can also maximize their proficiency by upholding high ethical standards. Organizations that foster unethical behavior put their establishment at risk for various consequences. So on top of implementing organizational behavior, managers also need to ensure their employees are behaving ethically.

Organizational Behavior and the Importance of Job Skills

In organizational behavior, managers need to understand what skills their employees have and what they need improvement on. With this comprehension, they can set up workshops and other events that will help their staff gain more experience in their careers. But how do these skills improve job performance? Interpersonal skills, problem-solving, adaptability, leadership, and management skills all contribute to a company’s success. These abilities are known as soft skills, and take time to learn and perfect. Employers search for people who have had years of practice, a keen ethical understanding, and who display a commitment to continuously improving their self-developed skills. “According to Wilhelm (2002), these essential soft skills are the requirements for high-performance work settings that add value and encourage productivity in the U.S. economy”(Tribble, 2009). In any organization, these skills significantly improve the way a business operates. Individuals who possess these abilities fuel the development of prominent business cultures, and consequently, the company will experience increases in productivity, profits, and camaraderie.

Organizational Behavior aids in Decision-Making and Problem-Solving

Furthermore, by utilizing organizational behavior, business managers can allow their employees to perform daily tasks on their own. Without having to micromanage their staff, managers can focus on other pressing issues. As a result, business functions improve tremendously because all employees are working in unison to accomplish company goals. Additionally, as employees gain experience, they equip themselves to handle challenging situations. They can simultaneously make prompt decisions and solve difficult circumstances all on their own. By applying organizational behavior, employees can improve their performance, their ability to work with and manage others and enhance their career success.

Consequences of Unethical Behavior in the Workplace

Managers can assist their staff through organizational behavior but they must also set ethical standards. Unethical behavior can be extremely detrimental to any organization; It creates an environment that fosters theft, mismanagement of time, lying, bullying, harassment, violating company policies and the list goes on. “In a business setting, management is responsible for setting, communicating, and modeling behavior expectations” (Keith, Perreault, Chin, & Keith, 2009, p.126). So, if management fails to uphold any ethical standards, their employees will do the same. The company could lose funds, linger in debt, tarnish their reputation and violate various regulations. These facts emphasize just how vital ethical behavior is to any organization. When management follows a high moral compass, their employees are inclined to support them. Therefore, their company will continue to behave ethically and set themselves up for many years of success.

In summary, organizational behavior assists managers in understanding how their employees behave. With this data, managers can place their employees in positions that will significantly contribute to the company’s growth and with the right guidance, employees will be able to make decisions and solve various problems on their own. However, upholding high ethical standards are crucial as well. When employees fail to behave ethically, their actions endanger the entire company. So, business managers need to understand and implement organizational performance and also ensure their employees behave ethically as they represent the company. In the end, the company grows enormously because their managers will not have to micromanage their staff. It gives them the freedom they need to address other significant matters and to create new ways to drive their company down profitable paths.
