Sir Edwin Sandys

Sir Edwin Sandys was a major supporter of funding and investing in colonies colonizing overseas. He had made several comments the English were behind the Spanish and other countries in colonizing in other places. Two companies emerged for funding, one in 1600 the East Indian Company and the other in 1606 the Virginia Company. The Virginia Company was made to raise funds for England to Colonize in North America. Sandy supported both companies and was even made on the council for the Virginia Company. Which helped get the company’s second charter in 1609. About 8 years later in 1617 Sandy started to invest more into Virginia, allowing more settlers to join the dwindling population in North America. He made it seem very successful. 3 years later in 1617 he made negotiations with Leyden Puritans which helped fund the Mayflower and the Pilgrim fathers in 1620. Though he had a theory not all would go well and fail, so he did what he could to ensure a successful mission. From constantly sending over nearly 4, 000 passengers to the new world, it was said to help Jamestown survive and not parish like the other colonies have. Not many people survived due to being unprepared, diseases, starvation, corrupted government, and Indian attacks. Without Sandy it seems like the Jamestown settlement would have never succeeded without him.

Reverend James Blair

James Blair was an ordained in the Church of England in 1685. An order was given to him by Henry Compton, to travel to the New World. His task was to repair and reconstruct the church in the Virginia Colony. He arrived in Virginia in the late 1685 where he began to help other parishes in the area besides his own. Blair had a passion for helping others in his parish and others. During his first two years there he was one of the few to purchase land. In 1687 he got married to a woman named Sarah Harrison. Their marriage was rocky, it was bad from the start. She died on May 5th, 1713. Blair endured another 30 years not being married. However, he seemed to have accomplished quite a bit in Virginia! Not long after the marriage, he got close to the inner families that dominated the colony. In December 1689, Francis Nicholson, came over to Virginia and offered to preside over the Anglican clergy of the colony in administrative matters. It is having been said he is the first to hold public office! One of the few things he had accomplished in Virginia along with founding a college we all know; William and Mary. Building it was not easy though. It took many tries just to get it approved! Blair helped saved it from failing and going to rumble. He found new ways to earn money to construct the school. It was started in 1716 and was later finished in 1721. During those times Blair had a few disputes he had to deal with Spotswood. It was mostly over political and religious issues more so than with the college.

William Gooch

William Gooch seemed to have a variety of importance in Virginia. He took roles in the political, tobacco Inspection Act, and even served in the military! King George I appointed William as a lieutenant governor of Virginia since he had good relationship with the very powerful duke of Newcastle. He was appointed on January 23rd, 1727. Gooch was to take place of Hugh Drysdale who died in July 1726. His family left late summer to arrive in the New World. When he got there many people liked him including the farmers. It was said he had an easy-going personality that allowed him to get along with a lot of people. That probably made it very easy for him to adjust to different life situations in the New World. He was very cheerful, and it made his life a lot easier. Making it easier for him to form better relationships with political leaders in the colony than any other governor had done in a long time. Better ties with the political leaders made it a lot easier for him to make decisions and to help them when it was necessary. However, around 1747 on November 4th, King George II gave him the title as a baronet. This allowed him to be called Sir William Gooch and was the only to receive such a title for a lieutenant governor. Not long after, he was promoted to a Major General. Gooch had accomplished a lot.
