Dual-Layered Protective iPhone Case

A mutual problem that is commonly found amongst all small electronic users is the fear and action of dropping your device and potentially breaking it. This issue is present amongst devices such as laptops, cellphones, tablets, portable music players as well as many others. Our team came up with the idea to make something that would make our device slip-proof and easier to carry with reducing the fear of dropping it. We brought the four of our ideas together into one, with compromise and revision.

One idea that arose, was to make a case for a device with a handle on the back of the case. It would allow you insert your hand for stability or hold onto it while moving around. The strap could be made from soft material or a harder material which would could fold into a kickstand. Another idea was to make a glove that one would slip on when using their device to prevent it from slipping out of their hand. The glove and the device would have a coating so that they would be more trustworthy and easier to hold on to. The idea of a case that would go around a cell phone made out of a high-friction, rubber material that was easy to hold on to was also brought up. The back of the case would have grooves in it that one could easily fit their fingers in to for a way to prevent the phone from sliding out of their hand. The inside of the case would have a light metal lining for more drop-protection. Finally, the idea of a product that would be a rubberized spray adhesive was another solution. A person would spray this onto their phones for a layer of protection as well as a slip-proof result.

As a group, we tried to combine a little bit of everyone’s idea into our final product for a slip-proof, drop-proof protection for the iPhone. We started with the idea that we would make a case. One with a slightly rounded-out back to allow for the center of gravity to remain in the center of the case which if the case were dropped, it would have a higher probability of landing on the cushioned back. We figured that a good solution for slippery phones was to add a rubber coating on the outside of the case to add more friction between the phone and the surface, like your hand. Another idea that we took from the group was that of the strap, or handle, on the back of the case. This strap would be slightly elastic so that it would firmly, but comfortably hold a person’s hand. The back of the case will also have a very slight indentation for the strap to retract into so that the back of the case will remain smooth and flush.

The inside of the case would have a thin sheet of aluminum to ensure rigidity if dropped. This sheet would have a series of holes, which would allow for the case to remain flexible while still being sturdy. In order to offer protection against scratches to the rear of the phone the metal would be encased in plastic, allowing for the phone to still remain aesthetically pleasing. We all liked the idea of the possible kickstand, so we designed a convex bottom to the rubberized case to act as a stand when the phone remained in a portrait orientation.

In addition to the case, we came up with the idea of a “sacrificial glass” screen that could adhere to the front of the phone. In case it falls, the sacrifice glass would crack instead of the actual phone screen glass. The layers of the phone would go as followed: screen protector iPhone, plastic layer, aluminum, plastic layer, rubber rounded backing, and hand/fingers strap.
